I might go to pull-a-part next weekend. My dad will take me if I go. I get free lead for $1 admission fee. It is a salvage yard. I have to manually pull the wheelweight off the cars. I get as much as I want for free, well $1 if you count admission fee. What do you think?

Does pull-a-part know your doing this, or are you filling your pockets and tool box on the sly? Might be better to ask them what they would sell them for if your not upfront about what your doing now.
Karma can really hurt later in life.

They let me. I've been there twice before. They let me have it because there is no use for the used wheelweights anyways... for them. I get a 5 gal bucket and fill it 1/4 full and show them what I have when I'm done and the person at the checkout area says you can have them.

Sounds like the cheapest source of lead I've heard of in a while!

Yep! Hopefully my dad will take me. The downside of this is it is about 11 miles away from our house. Maybe when I go I can get a full 5 gal bucket. A bucket full of lead should last me for about a day or two. Problem is how to move a heavy 5 gal bucket full of lead wheelweights...

You might take a wheelbarrow with you if you have some way of hauling it.

They got wheelburrows up front before you go in.

Just checked their website, and admission is now $2, still cheap for free lead wheelweights.

Nothing wrong with that. Sounds like a good outing to me.

You can take a dolly with you. The big problem is how do you get it in the car or truck. You may want to take 3 buckets and fill each one 1/3 full.

Just a thought.

I'd pay the $2 and another $5 to rent a wheelbarrow! go for it now, it might not be there later!

I've contacted several of my local U-Pull-It yards and they all told me, No Sir, you may NOT take ww's....but we'll gladly buy them from you & properly recycle them for .05lb (payout price one place told me)

I say get'em if they'll let ya.

My next door neighbors gave me a folding dolly one year for Christmas.
I didn't think I'd use it much, but it sure is handy at times!
I use it for groceries at times, or for fishing tackle. As well as a job bucket cart.
If you are going to gather much, try and find you a steel bucket like solvent or grease use to come it.
Strap the two together and have fun!

(Tell your Dad he can use it, too.)

I also use one of those. About 29.00 from amazon and 150lb weight capacity.
Good idea.

They provide wheelbarrows. My dad will lift it to put in in the car. My max weight I can lift is no more than 117 lbs at max. That is using all of my energy at once. Hope I go next weekend if the weather is nice. Good thing I got wheelweight pliers made to pull WW off of cars.

Take it from me- you are FAR FAR better of bringing multiple buckets and filling them partway instead of one big bucket and loading it full. A full WW bucket is easily 150# or more of dead weight and I have had handles break on me before!
Putting half loads in two buckets will save your back and possibly your feet.
Just strap the empty buckets (nested) on your dolly. Fill the bottom one half way. Then put the empty on top of it and fill it half way.
I have a junkyard budy that lets me do this too sometimes. Don't forget to look for the lead battery terminals on the battery cables. Lots of older cars still have these and they are lead too!

Junkyards here usually have the wheels off the cars in the lots. I've asked for WW a few times from my brother's friends working there, and haven't really had any luck. They seem to be leaving the WW on the wheels that they scrap.

The one I go to has wheels on cars, and they are even set up on welded rims. The rims that have no tires have WW on them. In the back of the salvage yard, the is a big stash of rims, and on almost every single one is WW. Wheel weights are everywhere in that scrapyard.

It is a go. My mom said she will take me, but I only get 2 hours to get wheel weights. She said I can only get as much as I can lift. That is about 50-60lbs. For a 20minute car ride, do you think getting 50-60 pounds of tire weights is worth it? I get them for free only paying admission. I usually get only about 35pounds of WW when I do go. Is this worth it? I will be using a wheelbarrow if they have them and if it is free to use them.

It is free, any reason why it wouldn't be worth it?

I forgot to mention, in the back of the salvage yard, there are a bunch of rims just sitting on the ground, maybe I'll be lucky enough to find some lead stick ons. Be neat to find some soft lead stick ons.

My parents took me to pull-a-part today. They dropped me off and for about 2 hours I pulled lead WW off of the vehicles. The lot is so big, I didn't go through 1/8th the lot. I got 21.6 pounds of lead tire weights for free. I even didn't have to pay admission. I even met a possible supplier of plumbing lead. He is a plumber and has a lot of lead saved at his house. My dad gave him our number if he has some to give away. I did not get a lot of weights, but it was free and all of the weights I got were lead only, no zinc or steel, just lead weights.

Here are the tire weights I got at pull-a-part. It is 21.8 pounds. That is good for 2 hours of pulling lead off of vehicles. It was free.

I might even go in another month or two. They don't have a way to price them, even though it is hard work pulling them off of vehicles, it is worth it if it is free, regardless of the amount.

It's like getting paid $10 per hour

Sounds like multiple buckets would be the ticket. Either that or eat your wheaties and grow stronger! :-)

Park the truck where you can see it.

Shoot the WWs over the fence with a slingshot.

Try not to hit the back window.;-)

My parents drove me. Don't have a license yet. I only had 2 hours to get those, and had to use WW pliers. A lot of the WW were rusted tight to the rims which also took away time and I was there pulling them off by myself. Most of the vehicles I saw had tiny WW on them. I should plan out where I should pull the weights off the cars before I go again soon, meaning where in the yard I should start, the path I should take, and what section to go through. Which kind of vehicles have the largest size WW on them, trucks, vans, old cars? It is still a good pick right?

I would hate to fill a bucket and have the handle snap while the bucket is hovering over my toes. The buckets that I have all have about a 1/2" lip of plastic at the bottom -- looks like it could chop one's toes off if it fell, or at least pull of some toe nails.
