Friend of mine (guy who sells me 5 gal ww @ $40 regularly) wants some 30-30 190 gr for black bear. All 3 of my load books stop at 170 gr.
I've found some 193 gr fn from Hunter supply that I want to try before committing to a new mould. I'll be using 3031.
Anybody know of printed data for the heavy boolits for the 30-30? I'm not much on experimenting blind. Thanks for any suggestions, Mac.

The RCBS 180 fp run around 195 lubed and checked.

Start around 28.0 grs 3031. Using the RCBS 30-180FN that will be right in the ballpark for duplicating the 303 Savage factory load of a 190 at 1900 fps. You may need to go up or down.

In both the .30/30 and .303 Savage, I have been using a 190gr. FN (an old custom Saeco design, cast from WW+tin,12bhn) over 28.0 grains 3031. Accuracy is superb, and energy level is sufficient for all of my hunting needs back east here. A heavy (for our area) 165 pound field dressed buck was knocked ***-over-tincups by me with it 2 months ago. Several other lesser whitetails never knew what hit them in previous years. I wouldn't hesitate a second to use it on a black bear. (But I suppose if I encountered a 500 pounder I would find myself wishing I had brought an '06 instead. I would probably still take the shot if the angle was right.)

If you friend wants top end loads with that heavy a bullet in the 30-30 for hunting bear then I suggest a switch of powder. A while back I worked with some 197 gr cast bullets from a RCBS 30-180-FN mould. With LeveRevolution powder I was able to easily get 2247 fps at 38,700 psi(M43) from my 24" barreled M94AE. That psi is within the range of tested psi's for factory 30-30 ammunition and is below the SAAMI MAP. It also was a very accurate load. You will get 2050+ fps from a 20" barreled carbine. If you are interested in an alternative powder to 3031 we can discuss it.

Larry, have you posted your findings regarding LR powder and heavy .30/30 bullets? If so, I missed it, and as I'm keen to try it I'll head to wherever you posted it. If you haven't posted your findings, I would be happy to continue this dialogue via PM. Thanks.

My old Lyman Cast Bullet Handbook has an article by Frank Marshall on the 311284 in .30-30 if memory serves.

Ill look it up later.

What gun? If lever action, OAL may be an issue and flat point or at least blunt round nose would be best.

The thread this is posted in is; http://castboolits.gunloads.com/showthread.php?t=115657&highlight=30-30+LeveRevoltution

Other good info there.

Got a chance to test the confirmation 10 shot strings today out of the M94 AE with 24" barrel.

Results are;

GabbyM's RCBS 30-180-FNs/197.5 gr/BHN 17.5
36 gr Win 760
R-P case
Rem 9 1/2 primer
2.522 OAL
2066 fps (corrected to muzzle)
1870 ft/lbs of energy
200 yard velocity; 1438 fps
906 ft/lbs of energy
SD 17 fps
ES 56 fps
MAP; 36,200 psi(M43)

Lyman 311041 HP/50/50 WW/pb + 2% tin/177 gr
34.5 gr Hodgdon LeveRevolution
FC cases
Rem 9 1/2 primer
OAL; 2.55
2218 fps (corrected to Muzzle)
1935 ft/lbs of energy
200 yard velocity; 1554 fps
950 ft/lbs of energy
SD; 19 fps
ES; 37 fps
MAP; 35,800 psi(M43)

A 5 shot string of LeveRevolution with the 30-180-FN bullet looked very promising at 2247 fps with 38,700 psi(M43). That's about a 190 fps gain over the Win 760 load. Remaining velocity at 200 yards is around 1600 fps with 1000+ ft/lbs of energy.

GabbyM; hard copy of Win 760 load data will be in the mail tomorrow.

36 gr of LeveRevolution with the 30-180-FN. Sorry, meant to put that in the post. The psi, while not at the 42,000 MAP for the 30-30 is still getting up there so start lower (suggest 34 gr) and work up. I know you will but just want to add that caution for others.

I like those 200 yd energy/velocities.

I recently aquired a 311365 SC Ideal.

I thought cast as a soft nose, it might work ok to 250yds from a 26" Savage 219.
after seeing what LarryG has done, 200yds appears attainable without stressing the gun, using LeveRevolution powder

I assume the Winchester 760 data would be the same for Hodgdons H414? Been thinking about getting the RCBS 30-180fn for a bit.

My limited testing of 760 and H414 show the differences to be within lot to lot variation. As always work up the load.

A 180-190 grain boolit in the 30-30 WCF a la the 303 Savage seems like a fine idea, The 1-12 twist in the 30-30 should stabilize it well, and I would cast them as softpoints for hunting work.

My #311041s cast as softpoints weigh 176 grains, using a #257420 lead slug as donor/point boolit. This is close, and shoots wonderfully--as well or better than j-words at similar velocity (2100 FPS) thanks to 32.0 grains of WW-748.

More reading for you, Mac3. The RCBS 180 FN looks like the go-to boolit for your needs.

would the pointy boolits work OK as a soft point?

initial expansion? then a partition style wadcutter driving through?
