I have the opportunity to purchase a navy arms Siamese Mauser in 45/70. Anyone here have one? I'm wondering what the barrels slug on these.

I don't know the dimensions, but do know there can be feed issues with them because of the rimmed cases.

I know about that, and that doesn't worry me. I'm more interested on how it shoots, etc

Navy Arms had the barrels made up for them from scratch, so I think that they would be a standard 458. I never herd of a Navy. I never herd of a Navy Arms conversion having feed problems. Remember, they did enough of them to get it correct. I have seen one or two done privately that were iffy.

One of my old gunsmith mentors recently died unexpedantly recently (he was 92.) I talked to him about one he did, and he said he just opened up the rails a bit. He said he might have adjusted the follower. His memory about such things was very shark: believe it or not...

He died the 6th of January 2012.

Over the years I owned a couple. They fed reliably as purchased, except with the Lyman 462560 bullet. I just polished the feedramp and all was well. Bore sizes as I recall were on the high side of .458, maybe .4587 or 8; they shot well with bullets sized to .458.

The Siamese Mauser has a totally different mag assembly from every other Mauser that
I have seen, heavily angled to deal with the rimmed cartridge. This is why they were popular to
convert to .45-70, because they were already set up to feed rimmed and I don't think it
is easy to convert a regular (rimless design) Mauser mag to feed rimmed.

No idea about groove diam, sorry.

I have had one for the past ten years. Using the Hornady 350 gr. RN jacket bullet will get me 3 shot groups of 1 inch at one hundred yards. Same thing with my 350 gr. cast sized to .460.

the two I owned both slugged between .459" and .460". They fed like poop thru a goose.

I got a few groups under an inch with the government bullet at 1700fps +/- using a scope.

I wish I had one or both of them back.

I had one of the first ones out in 1972? or so and it was a great shooter. I didn't have any feed problems with it when i used rn bullets. I shot 500 grain cast bullets and 500 grain jacketed slugs. I was young and foolish then and I used loads that were way more than anyone would ever need for anything! I got some reccommended loads from Elmer Keith. I had the bolt turned down and scope mounts put on and shot that gun for quite a while. Mine was the one with the 24" barrel not the carbine they made. It was just about an elephant gun.

Remember, the Siamese Mauser was designed for a rimmed case with a rim about the same as the .45-70.

I built my own back in the early '70s. I put a 24" "Star" barrel (I think they are "Shaw's" now). I've had not a single feeding issue with mine. I push a 400 gr Barnes Original SP to 2300 fps out of mine. The Lee C457-500-FN at .459 is pushed at 2100 fps (that is .458 Win Mag Terriitory). I did throat mine long so I could seat the 400 Barnes to mag lenght. That increases case capacity to the max. Shooting either of those loads out of the 8 1/2 lb rifle let's you know you pulled a trigger.....or wondering where that Joe Frazer right cross cam from.........:veryconfu

I prefer a 400 gr Lyman 457483 at 1700 - 1800 fps or better yet the Rapine 460250 270 gr bullet at 1050 fps.........getting soft in my old age.......

I have one in 348. mine came without a floor plate, follower and spring. numrich had a mauser floor plate and a diagram how to cut a notch in it for the siamese. I'm using mauser parts, but they could work better. I saw a follower spring that was a series of flat metal strips, with hinges and coil springs, instead of the z bent flat spring, think it was for the siamese. anybody ever see this? I need a follower for a siamese if anybody has one.

Larry you are a MAN! I had to cut back on loads like that. You must have talked to Elmer too. By the way the GUN didn't have problems with the hot loads, and the brass stood up well to, but my shoulder won't take those any more.

Not sure about "da man" as I was KO'd in the 9th round (if yu get the pun)[smilie=l:. Yes, those loads are BRUTAL off the bench. Not bad for a few off hand and sitting they roll me over backwards......what a good time:awesome:

Like I mentioned...I like the 270s at 1050 fps a whole lot better.........:bigsmyl2:
