I want to have some silhouettes made up for Cowboy Lever Rifle and I'm wondering what plate to specify. T-1 armour?? I'm looking for something sturdy in case someone uses some FMJ's on them. TIA.

AR500 is what I use and I get them form Arntzen targets

Slug, Lefty is correct.
The T-1 will work for lead bullets at 1250fps impact velocity and last forever if 3/8" is used on rams- go thicker to 1/2" on the chicken and pig. I have some 5/8" chickens and they do fine too. The craters are the problem. You do not want your targets to even dimple much less crater.

For anything someone might use for ammo in an NRA rules lever match, AR-500 is better by far. You will get some weld breakage in the AR-500 in time.

Nothing will prevent damage if mags are used and high speed 22's and the like. You just have to police it if you want to keep your targets in good shape.

Shoot BPCR type loads and targets last almost forever.

I hope this helps,

i have shot the T-500 with fmj's in my 30-40 krag and 308 win.
it just tipped the cut out's over.
we use them for both the long range and pistol cartridge levergun silhouette matches.
no damage to any of them for over 6 years now.

AR 500 is definately what to specify if you are having them made. AR stands for Abrasion Resistant, and you really don't want to grind on it too much as it is really Abrasion Resistant.

Pretty tuff stuff.

We use T1 for most of our gongs at our range. They do get damaged over time, mainly when people use the 5.56 855 stuff on our 100yd gongs.

We did put up AR500 gongs for the 50 bmg crowd, but our closest one is 335 yds away. Homogenous solids just leave a slight smear on the gong.

+1 for Quality Target. I just bought a bunch of AR-500 targets from him and am very pleased with them.

FMJs only leave a shiny spot but flat nose cast boolits at full 30-30 velocity leave dimples!

Slug: my recent surfing
T1: brinell 260
AR500:brinell 500=hard and tough, not brittle
Welding(acetylene cutting) inadvisable, may soften the plate, use bolts to assemble(makes replacement and reversing of plate easier).

The position of your targets will have a lot to do with the life time you receive. By that I mean the angle that they hang. If at a slight angle downward so that the rounds are sent downward is the way for them to be set.
They are your targets so if someone shoots holes with the wrong ammo, make them pay up to replace the target. That's a easy thing to do, plus tell them if they shoot them up they lose the right to shoot there anymore.
That will work with all well intended shooters.

The thing is, silhouettes don't hang. You can do that with SASS targets but levergun silhouettes need to stand up straight on their own feet.

If you are using them for practice, hanging them means you don't have to walk down and reset.
