Hello ML crowd. I'm new to the game and would love to hear what you use for between-shot cleaning solutions. When I run out of the TC cleaning stuff I've got, I have a feeling I'll want to make the next batch by hand.
I like to clean after every shot, and I'm shooting a TC Encore 50 cal with 320 grain R.E.A.L. bullets. I'm currently using 777, though I'll probably go to BP when it's used up. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

How are you cleaning between shots?

I am using a damp patch over my jag while seating the ball or bullet. It seems to really help.

I think a lot of people are using Ballistol and water mix.

For my shooting I very seldom swab between shots unless the ball starts getting a bit tight, and then it is just a wet patch, with either spit if I am hunting or water if there is some near by, followed by a dry one. I only shoot PRBs so I don't know what to tell you about the REALS. Also I only use the Holy Black, no substitutions so I don't know anything about cleaning the substitutions.

Best wishes,

Joe

I'm using one wet followed by one dry cloth between shots. I will do a search on Ballistol.

When I am shooting the 50 caliber at the pit I bring a shotgun rod with a brush on it.
When the ball gets hard to push I run the brush, shoot a few caps then loading is easy again.
I am usually good for 5 or 6 shots before it is needed.

I used to swab between shots and pop a cap to clear the flash channel like Ron. Now if i swab after i take a shot i run a spit patch down the barrel but i don't swab the last 1 1/2 of the barrel that way i don't get gunk in the flash channel. I dry the barrel with both sides of a patch the same way staying away from the flash channel. Then i reload. Another way that works well for is to use a blow tube after i take a shot then i reload then swab the bore with both sides of a spit patch then i dry the barrel with both sides of a dry patch. If i am target shooting i use Hopes #9 for patch lube and i don't swab between shots.

I don't swab when using REALs. It should clean or clear rather the fouling by scraping it down when pushed in.

Thanks all! I appreciate the insight.

Use water for all cleaning with black powder. Nothing else. I follow up with WD40 after the dry patches to make sure all the water is gone.

I tried the patches they sell pre-greased with Bore Butter or Wonderlube, and they didn't work well at all-- they left a lot of fouling in the bore. A regular cleaning patch moistened with spit works quite well for cleaning between shots. (The BP fouling is easily disolved in water, so...) Spit is pretty cheap too, just put the patch in your mouth to moisten it. Talk about cotton mouth...

excellent. I definitely felt fouling from each shot using 777 and TC maxi-hunters (350 grain), which is why I ask.

Ballistol and water 50/50 mix in a spritz bottle. Works for me.

Good stuff, huh? (Blackhorn209). They carry it at my local gun shop.
