Saw the little brass funnel around the cap on a caplock at Cabelas the other day.

What is it? Does it help keep gunk off of the outside of the gun? If so, where do you get it?!

Keeps the powder and metal fragments from hitting you and the gun.

Most places that sell BP assessories sell them. Like cainsoutdoors and dixiegunworks.

Tommy boy is right. its a flash hider sort of. to keep from burning you and the wood around the nipple. if you shoot your muzzie a lot with hot caps it will burn your wood. GD

My wife and friends tell me I need to get off the farm more. I guess they are right. I had often thought about cutting and bending a piece of thin sheet metal in a 90 degree angle and drilling it to where the nipple threads would just fit through it to keep the heat off the wood, but I guess someone beat me to it and with a better idea. The only question I have is what happens if you are caught in a down pour? does your cap float off the nipple when the funnel fills up with water?

Best wishes,

Joe

They are a lot nicer, if you cut a V notch in the front of the cup, and also in the front of the hammer down to the anvil. That will direct fragments ahead of you, rather than back in your eyes. V'ing the hammer also aids in splitting the spent cap, making it much easier to remove from the nipple.

They do help in keeping the gunk off the gun.. I made one from a piece of 45ACP brass.. worked great, but was a little on the thin side.. I damaged it and didn't feel the need to spend the time making one so I went and bought one for 4 bucks..
