300 gr. rcbs lead gc , would 34.0 to 36.0 gr of IMR 3031 be ok or is that to light of a load ,? any problems ?i know there are better powders for lite loads , put have tons of 3031, heres the deal ,have new win 1886 45-70 EL sited in with 405 gr rcbs lead gc and 39.0 gr of imr 3031, want less recoil and save my lead now that WW are starting to be fazed out. and trying to keep peep site where it is so can use 405 gr load for hunting ,thought maybe 3 gr. less powder might work with the 100 gr. less lead bullet ,trieng to get 300 gr and 405 gr bullet to hit to same point of aim using same powder ,just didnt know if that was to low of a drop in gr. wt, or if that low of a charge would cause problems

lighter boolits usually hit lower.
they ain't in the bbl as long under recoil.
i would use a filler with the reduced load.
slowing them down might do it.
i'd be for trying another load if that don't work out pretty quickly though.

It's a mild load but no too low. Good luck on your quest to find a load that has the same POI with different weight boolits. If the boolit hits low drop the charge weight and if it hits high speed it up.

Add me to what has already been stated. I don't know about the filler as I have never used any other than a bit of tissue paper from time to time with position sensitive powders. I never considered 3031 to be one of these. Good luck on your quest. I have never gotten that lucky to get 2 different cast wts to shoot at the same POA.

Best wishes,

Joe
