What is the typical size range of the throats on a 357? What is ideal?

.355-.360+

A little over bore size is ideal, depending on who you ask.

.358" is most common cast boolit size.

My GP100 is .358" so I use .359" cast boolits...works for me. I get a little leading at times but that's a gunsmith's fault.

This is a question with no real answer. Different makers, different models, different years,
HUGE variation.

IF the groove diameter is .357, then .358 would be about ideal. But all machines have
tolerances.

IME, .38/.357 guns run a lot more consistently on dimensions than .45 Colt revolvers, by
far. The majority of my S&W guns are right about on .357 or .358, but that is just a sample
from one company. I have not actually measured a Colt .38 Spl or .357 Mag throat
diam, so I have no data. I have read that Colt barrels are sometimes tighter or choked,
but no personal info. Now as to Dan Wesson, or Ruger, or Taurus. . . . . . . I have no idea.

Ideal doesn't exist. Ideal is based pon the bore diameter of the barrel on your gun.

The key is getting the throat and barrel matched up so the bullet can be just over bore diameter when it hits the forcing come.

I gave up long ago trying to figure put how things should be and decided it was more worthwhile to learn how to make what I had work.

[QUOTE=ColColt;1576118]My GP100 is .358" so I use .359" cast boolits

my throats will have a tough time fitting a .358 bullet in throat 1,2,3,4. 5,6 i can fit a .358 bullet in them so i ran my sizer out to 359 and now i get no leading at all!!!! just tested it yesterday, before i was getting smearing at the force cone and ahead a little bit now its fixed. id just test it that way.
