I'm looking for a load for my 45 colt ruger blackhawk 4 5/8 barrel using the Ranchdog 290grn plain base bullet cast with WW's and weigh about 297 grns. I would like to be around 800-1100 fps. The powders I have on hand include HS6, True blue, enforcer, lil gun, 2400. If anyone has any good loads I would love to try them out.

I shot some with WC820. They went bang and were OK but it is a project I have not returned to.

Not the same bullet but I shoot a 290 gr group buy bullet in my Marlin and Blackhwak in 45 Colt. I use 10.5 gr of surplus 105, a powder very similar to AA5. Goes 900 or so in my BH, about 1100 in my Marlin 1894.

Recoil isn't bad and it shoots quite well.

John Linebaugh suggests 12.5-13.5gr of HS-6 under a 310gr cast boolit. I'd start at about 12.0gr HS-6 and work my way up. HS-6 is a great mid range powder.

supertodd,
Using a GB bullet that weighs close to 300 gr, 18.0 gr of 2400 and WW large pistol primers I get 1050 fps. out of a 4 5/8" barreled Bisley/Vaquero.

Thanks guys that gives me a great starting point. I'm amazed how there is not more mid range data out there- keep any loads coming.

While it is a Lee 255gr RF mold they drop at 260gr with my alloy, I have tried out several powders with my 45 Colt over the past couple of months with varied weights of boolits. I also have one of the RD molds but the GC version as I also planned on using it in my 454.

I have settled on the HS-6 loads in my 45 as they have produced excellent velocity and accuracy with the 260's, as well as very low ES's of under 20fps. I poured up a couple hundred of the RD's this past week and plan on sizing, loading and shooting some then using the HS-6, but will also give some 2400 a try as well. I plan on also trying some in both PB and GC just to see if they will both shoot OK in my revolver. I will post up my results if your interested.

I shoot gobs of those over 9.0gr. Trailboss. Not terribly powerful but extremely accurate.

I use 18.5 grs of 2400 with the RD 290 grain boolit in my Marlin 1894 Limited. Sized at .454 with a Hornady GC it's one of my most accurate loads in this rifle.

supertodd. Most of those loads look pretty hot to me. I would start at 12.5 grs of 2400 at 12060 psi and 768 fps out of my 4 5/8's inch barrel, if it were me shooting it.

Apples to oranges here but here's what I got, lee C 452-300 RF, it weighs 310 in my alloy
I started with 2400 but wasn't happy with the accuracy without it shooting way above the
front sight ( gun is a new vaquero with 7-1/2" barrel ) I don't believe I was in 2400s happy
spot yet. I went back to 8 grs unique for around 850 fps and accuracy is really good up
close ( 20/40 yds ) but when shooting at my 200 yd gong it appears to be about an 8 ft
group. This boolit has a big wide nose and I think it acting like a wadcutter.

Probably nothing here to help you, just thought I'd throw my two cents in.
