My FIL is going to borrow some pin guages from work so that I can measure the throats on my 480 SRH. I have a couple questions:

-What should my measuring tolerance be (I was guessing somewhere around 0.0005)?
-Has anyone measured the throats on their 480? What are the common sizes (I know that it will be around .476)? I just want to have an idea so that I can tell him which gauges to bring home.

Thanks for any help,
Branden

.476, .477, .478, .479, .480 should do it. If they have .0005" in between, getem too.

Gage pins come in .001 steps. If they are a minus set, they are .0002 smaller than
the marked dimension, so a .475 marked one will actually go into a .475 hole.

Ok thanks, to expand on this question....I will probably also measure my 38 and 357 while I'm doing it. What are the common sizes for throats in those calibers? Somewhere around .357 to .359?

Thanks again,
Branden

As Bill mentioned you should confirm that the pins you are borrowing are from a minus set !

I would want to take .356 and .360 unless you are prepared to reject the gun if the
sizes fall outside of what you have to measure.
