With the use for hog hunting, what would the recommendation for an alloy be for a 44mag,300gr Lyman swc.It would be used in a revolver.I have on hand ,WW,lino,Lyman#2 and soft lead. Thanks

I would go with straight wheel weights or even cut them some with pure lead, maybe 75/25. You want a bullet hard enough to penetrate well but going too hard can get you a brittle bullet. You could even water drop the cut WW to get more hardness without increasing the brittleness.

Last piggie I shot was with the RCBS 300 gr 44 Mag from straight WW plus 2% Sn, no need for anything harder.

i'd go with a fairly balanced tin- antimony alloy.
probably ww's and pure 80-20 with 1% tin added [wait thats what i use for almost everything].
waterdropping it will add enough hardness to penetrate and the low antimony and tin balance will keep the boolit from being brittle and it will hold together.
no need to get cowboy with the loads either, keep em around 1200 fps.

I cast the Lee 452-300RF for my 454 using straight WW and found it works just fine at around 1450fps.

I know your looking for 44 info but similar bullet, similar weight out of similar alloy is going to actually work for you a tad better. Couldn't tell you if there was any expansion on the boolit as I didn't recover it from the 87yd shot. The hog DID do somersaults, rear over ears, however when it hit her.

I don't see where cutting back the straight WW with pure lead or 50/50 alloy would do any harm either. Just when you get ready to put one through your hog, either go for the head just below the ear and in line with the eye, or just a couple of inches above the belly line, and directly in line with it's front leg, for a heart/lung shot. Their vitals are up front a bit more than a deer or similar, so "behind" the shoulder isn't quite as effective.

Good luck with your hunting.

agree with all the above ww, and maybe a little soft and waterdrop say 74%coww's and
24% soft lead plus some tin 2% to fill out

Thanks guys for the info.Too bad I'm not the one going pig shooting.A co-worker of my brother was talking to him about it and the subject came up on what would be better, cast or jacketed.A good cast bullet was the one that was decided on and since I have a 44mag and bullet moulds,my brother asked me what I thought. My thought was using a 240gr or heavier with a Lyman #2 alloy, but I was wondering what others thoughts were.I'm leaning toward The Lyman 300gr with #2 alloy. Now to decide on the powder.Mybe 2400.but I see Accurate now has a powder called 4100.My look into that too

I have used 296 in my 44mag loads for a long time but would like to try something different.Does anyone have a recommended 296 load for a 300gr

I have used 20.0 grains with the Lee 310 bullet in my Redhawks. This load is probably a little on the warm side for the lighter guns. Which revolver does your friend have?

20 grs of 295 will get you around 1168 fps out of a 7.5" barrel revolver using the lee 310 gr boolit with 939 fpe and 23524 psi.

My brother didn't tell me what revolver his co-worker has.I talked to my brother this morning and asked him to find out what he has and to measure the chamber throat sizes.
