Picked it up today out of layaway. Made in 1903 and refinished at some point, but it was done very well. It's a 24' round barrel sporting rifle. Here are the obligatory pics:

Wow Jay, Very nice.
That is my favorite caliber in the 1892 Winchesters! I have rifle envy.
Enjoy.

Very nice rifle indeed. I have always wanted a 38WCF but have never found one that I could afford or was in good shape.

Best wishes,

Joe

Thanks for the comments guys. I should have mentioned, since this is Cast Boolits :), that I have a mold from Accurate Molds on order. So I'll be starting on load development when it gets here.

Congrats on the 1892 Win. in 38 WCF, I have a Uberti 1873 in 38 WCF caliber. I don't know if you are a smokeless or blackpowder shooter, 2400 works great in my rifle. JMHO

Looks like a super slick piece. A buddy has a 1919-vintage '92 in .38WCF that I cast boolits for. Occasionally, he let's me shoot it...if I promise to wipe off the drool before I hand it back to him.

That's interesting, I wonder what imageshack is up to? My employer's firewall blocks photobucket. Not only do I not see pictures, there's no notice of any kind just blankness. I have to wait until I get home to see them :)

Dunno, may be totally unrelated. I'm at home and had other windows open but inactive. Message said another PC was trying to access mine. Can't be too careful these days.

The 38-40 is also one of my favourite calibers as well. I've had a '92 Winchester, a '94 Marlin SRC and currently have an original '73 in that caliber. I'm loading some up today, using 17.5 grains of IMR SR4759 for about 1,305 fps, very close to original black powder pressure and velocity. I use an RCBS mould which gives me 180 grain plain base bullets. Here's a photo of the makins'

Nice looking boolits Kirk. What length barrel are you getting that velocity from?

I intend to try SR- 4759 also, but there isn't any available locally. It will have to wait until I can put together a big enough powder order to make the hazmat worthwhile.

That velocity is out of the 24" barrel of my '73. If you can't get SR4759, 17.5 grains of 5744 also works well and gives about the same velocity.

I took it to the desert today with a box of Ultramax cowboy loads. Shot it at approx 25 yards from a sitting position. Best group was 4 shots inside one of the 1 inch squares on the paper with one flyer. I'm pretty sure the flyer is me, not the rifle, I need a lot more practice shooting that way :). There was an old bleached cow bone next to where I set up so for grins I threw it out about 15 or 20 yards, filled the magazine and proceeded to hammer it into bone dust. :)

Just waiting on the mold etc. now to start some load development.
