i had planned on asking this question earlier.....

when smelting the lead should the pot be covered or not?

over the weekend i covered my pot (coleman outdoor stove with a iron pot and lid), my production rate went from about 10#/hr to over 60#in 90mins....so i guess i answered my own question...

I usually cover the pot for the reason you mentioned, it melts faster. If there is anything in the wheelweights that might cause an explosion the lid also adds some protection from splatter.

Plus you won't have to flux as much, and you'll have less smoke (until you lift the lid).
