Is this mold really this valuable? Other than pure collector value?

It went from 43.00 to over 200 in the last few minutes. I thought that I had every 38-40 mold lyman made because I can't find reference to this 401258. It looks like a great design, may I add. Dan

Could this be for a .40 cal. rifle?
Maybe a light 40-70 or smaller rifle caliber?

Is it that valuable? Probably not, but there are some insane buyers on flea bay. Sometimes if the price is too low some buyers have their friends bid on it with outrageous prices so that they don't have to sell it below what THEY think it is worth.

Ghost bidders, But $200+? Maybe just to find out what the max "real" bid would be? Then again some of these are for real. I've sold a few rather common molds, one DC lyman mold sold for over $150, paid and all.

Looks like the 40-60 Winchester bullet.

I agree with the idea that it is a 40 cal mold, but not for the 38-40. It is too long and would make the OAL excessive. Probably for 40-60 Winchester as already mentioned. Also possibly for the 40-70. As to value anything is possible when one is dealing with old or discontinued molds and bidders on E-Bay get caught up in the urination game. I think that it would be a mite heavy as well for the 38-40. LLS

Some of this fleabay stuff is getting a bit beyond my comprehension. If it makes you feel any better, it just dosn't look like a real good design-- a bit too much too far forward. (Could be wrong on this but don't think so )
You have to remember, Lyman would make about anything anyone would ever want. Not all of it was successful, Lyman was only concerned with the bottom line. Preformance rested with the designer.

It depends on how bad the person wants it. I have lost bidding wars with people very early on in auctions. The final price was always way out of my budget. Some times molds go for way more money than one would ever expect.

Collectable is a subjective term in most cases. One thing for sure though....if you want a particular mold that skyrockets in price on ebay we have many great mold makers here that can make anything you want, and Ballisti-cast just threw their name in the hat for group buys. Never ceases to amaze me how great the access to great molds and casting equipment has become compared to back in the "dark ages" when a lot of us started casting. Then toss in all the guys making special sizer dies, top punches and a myriad of accessories and it is The Golden Age of casting......ain't life grand? On top of all that ...toss in the knowledge base of here and our sister site!!!!. It just doesn't get any better.

Almost looks like a WFN bullet for the 38-40.. But I agree, even though it's listed for the 38-40 it's a rifle bullet. Thanks for the input./ Dan

I quit bidding on Flea bay casting products as you will have persons with one bid show up and you know they are there to drive up the price.
