Here is a H&R that a friend wants to sell me:

Just a short little barrel

no rear sight

He already told me that he gave $150 for it probably 20 years ago. Due to the missing rear sight and light rust spots I don't think I can offer him any more than that today. I have already checked with Numrich, and no joy on the rear sight. What bothers me most is the play in the cylinder. There is some play in the cylinder when the hammer is cocked. I wonder if the play is normal or something to worry about before I test fire it. If anyone has an idea on where to find a rear sight, or has thoughts on the cylinder play, please let me know....

General opinions on these little revos would be good too. Thanks

Ignore cylinder play when cocked. Instead pull the trigger, lower the hammer to full contact and check the play in that condition.

Sorry, I can't help you with the sight.

Well, the play is there with the hammer down too. Could probably make a rear sight if I knew what it looked like.

Dan: I don't know if the play can be corrected, but as long as it remains in place (and the b/c gap isn't excessive) when fired, it will likely be okay.

A decent gunsmith can put a nice rear sight on the revolver. It has enough barrel for small game hunting (rabbits, squirrels, armadillos, fox and such.) Go ahead and buy it for $150.00 and take it to a trusted gunsmith.

A rear sight can generally be found at Numerich Gun Parts. If the bore is in decent shape, you'll get your money's worth from the piece.

gunfan: This one will be a home project. If I can find the sight it will be no problem to install. Just held in by two opposing set screws. If I could see a picture of the base could probably file the sight out of shim stock. Numrich does not show the sight and had to call them to find out it was NLA....

Dan:

Sorry, Kid. There are other companies:

Jack First (605) 343-9544

Guns & Gun Parts (413) 732-9938

Guns & Gear (413) 786-0100

I hope that this helps.

Is that in .32 H&R Magnum? (R73)

I bought a High Standard on Gunbroker this summer for $199. I believe they are a step above the H&R and I have owned both. Mine needed some file work and a bluing touch up but I would pass for $150 on that one.

I would have to pass on that one too, it needs too much and will cost you more than you think to get it done. IMHO you would be better off to keep looking for another, possibly a S&W, Ruger, or Colt in nice shape, which might not cost much more than the H&R. Don't forget that the there is resell value to think about.

I test fired the revo, and was able to keep shots on a milk jug at 30' without the rear sight. This gun really has no forcing cone. The barrel is just flat in front of the cylinder. I looked real close and found no evidence of lead shaving at the breech so maybe the play is not hurting anything. I appreciate everyones advice to pass at $150, but I like how it shoots, so I think I will offer him less, maybe $100 and see what he says. Ahh, here he comes now...

Well, he wouldn't take less than $150, but he will buy the sight that I ordered when it comes in.

I have the 5 or 6 inch version of that in my safe, it was my grandpa's pistol and both of my boys started shooting handguns with it. I have several .22 handguns and it still comes out for a round of plinking once in a while.
