View Full Version : Short-tapped ring holes

This is a bottom ring from a pre-1981 Redfield ring set with 5-44 screws. The two screws shown here are tightened down as far as they will go. All eight holes were short-tapped, some more than others. Needless to say, the heads of the original screws were boogered. This might explain why some scopes insist on shooting loose.... It's easy to check by simply hand-turning a screw through the holes. And easy to fix by running the proper tap through the holes.

T/C barrels usually have one or more short tapped screw holes. I usually fit each one by filing off some of the threads and tightening to make sure the base is actually contacting the barrel. Seemed like an easier fix than retapping the holes.

Interesting! I thought that everything made in the 'good old days' was perfect and
most things made now are 'junk'. ;-)
