View Full Version : Interest In Aluminum Gas Check Material

I would like to know if there would be any interest in some aluminum strip that

can be used for making gas checks. It is .016 thick x .500 wide x 80 foot roll. This

material is mill finish. You can get 2000 plus 30 cal. checks per roll. Price would be

$7.50 a roll plus shipping. Up to 5 rolls in the flat rate envelope for $5.00. If there

is enough interest I will get some and post it in the swapping and selling section.

Please post any interest here in this post.

Thanks

How hard is the aluminum?

And here I was sitting around this morning thinking up ways to split a 6 inch roll in to strips.
This would be more better economically

I'd be in for some, I just made my disc puncher yesterday :)
Providing it is .500 & n0t .510, 'casue that won't fit the puncher I built

Waiting for my die, but interested in your material it is .002 thicker than Marlin lists, and the hardness is important ... have you chatted with him about it?

30/30 guy, the aluminum is 3003-H14 Alloy. It is soft. Bends easy.

Jim, The width is right on .500

Drbill33, no I have not spoken with him. I will send him a P.M.

"3003 This is a general purpose manganese alloy that is the most widely used of all aluminum alloys. The addition of Manganese increases its' strength by 20% over the 1100 grade. This combines the excellent characteristics of 1100 with higher strength. It has excellent corrosion resistance. It has excellent workability and it may be deep drawn or spun. It can welded by all conventional processes. Like 1100, it also can not be heat treated. This alloy is commonly used to make cooking utensils, decorative trim, mail boxes, awnings, siding, storage tanks, and window frames lithography plates."

I'm in. I'll have some. Will you send to New Zealand?

JeffinNZ, Yes I can ship to New Zealand. But shipping will be around $15.00 . I will have to make sure.

I will get some material this week and post it in the swapping and selling section.

I've just miked my bullet shank and it is .283, I think I would need a GC thickness of around .014.

Do you think .016 will work? Or it would be too tight in my 308 sizer?

LatheRunner
02-04-2012, 12:17 AM
taminsong, I think you might be right. I do not make gas checks myself. If your die is .308, and your bullet shank diameter is .283. That would be .308 - .283 = .025. Divided by 2 = .0125

S0 .014 material would give you .0015 press per side. The .016 material would give you .0035ress per side. I should be able to send you a 12 inch sample to try through the regular mail. If you will P.M. me your address I will send you one.

If you're right, 5 rolls will amount to 10,000 pcs of gascheck and maybe it will last a looooong time!

Charlie the freechex guy wrote in a email that his very recent tests were fine with .0175 annealed strips using a propane benzomatic hand held torch. He said he conducted tests first with the freechex II and then the freechex III in 30 caliber. Mild extrusion took place as he expected with the oversize strips. Width of the strips are of course not a problem.

I have found that .016 material worked good in the PM die, and in the .303 British FreeChex III die.
Both applied to 30 caliber .286 shanked cast bullets.

However, with the 30 caliber FreeChex III, due to the tighter tolerances, the material will occasionally stick and cause difficulty.
I believe it is a characteristic of the material itself, as I have tested up to .020 soft aluminum samples and have produced very good checks for 30 caliber.

But the material will form very good, to excellent gas checks in those dies noted.
I have every reason to believe it will work excellently for other calibers as well.

I currently know of an additional source for .015 material. But it isn't available as of yet, as of this posting.

I received my order of this material today.

WOW! was I impressed with this material. I put the micrometer on it and it read 0.016" as advertised.

I got my PatMarlin's Checkmaker out and cut and formed a few checks.

This material cut much easier than the Ace 0.014 stuff.

This material formed much easier than the Ace stuff.

The formed checks seemed to fit the boolit shank better also.

Is the use of aluminum for gas checks a common thing? I'm curious about this as all aluminum contains a fair amount of oxides, which are much harder than steel- I was always told not to use aluminum cleaning rods without a muzzle guide for this reason. I would think that aluminum gas checks would result in a lot of wear.

:D:D I received my order from Latherunner yesterday afternoon. Good stuff!! Great supplier to do business with.

I set up my .32 Checkmaker™ last evening and before I knew it I had burned through one roll. I looked at the clock and it was 02:00. This stuff could be the cause of a serious lack of sleep. :D

I hope Kevin has the necessary widths for .40 & .45 in the future.

Received my order Friday. It fits the .338 check maker from Pat but on the 30 cal you need to use 2 hands to pull it through, still a lot better than cutting strips and getting them a little small and cutting out the side and then they won't slide through. Very happy and well worth the price.

Yesterday, the pretty USPS lady delivered to me two rolls of latherunner's Al. gas check material. All is required now is a proper spool to feed Pat Marlin's die.

Kevin made my decision to buy from him an easy task. His two samples entered Pat's die without a hiccup. The discs cut easily with no problems. A tribute to Pat's craftsmanship and latherunner's truth in advertising his product.

If I am to nitpick, I can say the ONLY small bump in the road was the male portion of the cup forming die. Unlike some harder alloy g'check stuff, the supplied Al. formed around minute imperfections and refused to let go. A tiny bit of polishing and viola! What checks I made snapped easily onto three different boolit designs from three different mould makers.

All is well and I recommend both items without reservation.

Ya'll have good wk. end,
Wt.

The tool is soft enough that you can clean up the feed slot in the PM die with a jewelers file, or folded aluminum oxide abrasive cloth.
That will allow the .500" material to feed as it should.
The fit and finish is sorely lacking on the PM tools, so it behooves you to clean it up.
There are burrs in the aperture from the cutter used to make the slots.
Clean yours up and it will feed.

Latherunner:

Is there anything new on the availability of material wider than .500"? I would like a couple rolls of material in the range of .550" - .750" wide for use in .40-.45 calibers with the FreeChex III die. Charlie indicated the .500" would be to narrow for the wider calibers.

Anyone else have any experience with the .500" material and larger calibers in a FreeChex III?

Newb question here. I've ordered my first mould (to give you an idea of how newb I am), and I'm looking into getting gas checks ready while I wait on the group buy to happen.

What tool would I use to make GC out of this material for a .311 (.308 WIN) projectile?

I bought 5 rolls and I am making 30 cal. gas checks with a FreeChex 111. This stuff works great. Already made 2000 with the first roll. They fit tight on every boolit that I have tried them on. I size at .309 to .312........Terry

Lathe Runner:

What would be possibility/availability of coils in 3003 alloy; .020 thickness for use in .50BMG?

Material width needs to accommodate gas check material size of ~ 0.812 (0.512 + 0.150 + 0.150). Mt Gas Check maker is a specially constructed FreeChex III for the .50BMG.

I am expecting an NOE .50BMG in late March 2013 (barring further schedule slips); like to have a 1000 gas checks made up by 1 April if I can find a material vendor.

There is a guy selling already made GCs in various thickness at about $23/K and will kick in another 100 just to make sure; and an extra 100 if you are active duty or a vet. Check(pun intended) him out at thegascheckstore.com. I bought some for .38/.357 after measuring the diameter of the heels. They work thru my old Lyman sizer/lube and don't fall off. Have not shot any yet due to the weather and other things.
