What's the best overall twist rate for a 55 gr 22 cal say out of a 223. Cast.bullet of course.

1 in 12 or 14 depending if the slug is a RN or pointed

If you want to push to the highest velocity with accuracy and/or have full functional reliability with a gas gun with the best accuracy; 14" twist if cast bullets of up to 60 gr (fully dressed) are used. 12" if up to 70 gr.

Larry, what would your opinion be as to optimum rpm/velocity to shoot toward in a 9" with the +/- 62gr NATO GB boolit?

The best accuracy with 22 - 26" barreled bolt guns will probably be in the 1800 - 1900 fps range. Usable accuracy can be had up through 2000 - 2100 fps. Functional reliability with accuracy (usable as in 20 shot strings) in a 20" barreled AR may be slightly less.

Slower is easier Rich, save yourself the problems I had to overcome with my 1/8 6x45, but don't go so slow as to limit yourself when it comes to jacketed, unless you're figuring on shooting boolits only. Since I pretty much did get the problem overcome with the 6x45, when I got a 223 barrel, I got a 1/9, but that was more because of the price consideration. I've since decided not to mess with the .22 boolits. One pain in the rear is enough, but with regular rifling it probably would have been easier to get it to shoot accurately than the 5R rifling of the 6x45.

Get a 1:14.
When you want to shoot J bulets use a Sierra 53gr flat base match King. Or the 50 gr varmint bullets. They work best out to 500 yards in a 223 anyway.

I've assumed you'll be using a rifle barrel not a 16" pistol barrel.
