Anyone tried out the old NEI paper patch design with the front of the bullet a little bigger in diameter than the patching area of the body of the bullet? Results?

there was a writeup about them way back in the early 80s. they are a fix on a non problem , .
some fellow in nome wrote them up , the artical was in an old black powder magazine published in montana. now defunct

I have a old Montana mould with this bullet. It's actually a good shooting bullet but it had a tendency to smear a little after several shot fired.
Never figured out why the very shallow grooves unless they thought it would hold the patch better.

I'm not sure that is the bullet Good Cheer was talking about.
Good Cheer, can you tell use which one you are talking about? Which mould number? I have the one John King sent me to try because he had no use for it. Turns out Neither do I.
If I can find it I will post a Pic. Odd bullet for sure.

It's the NEI .45-410-PP #278.

NOPE, different one.
I was thinking of the #274. Mine casts 0.443" and patches up to 0.449" With #8 Selth Cole paper.
It's only OK. Like Powder Burner said. "they are a fix on a non problem"

The mould was given to me to try by a gunsmith friend that did not want it back. I don't use it either. Might make for a OK hunting bullet.

This is the NEI with the step up to the nose so that the paper is not larger in diameter than the nose. Odd design.

That is for a magazine feed so the patch dont snag when it is run up the loading ramp into the chamber.

Yeah, I agree. hence the crimp groove. I shot them in the 1886 you see in my avatar. Their OK.

It's in a double cavity with the old .351 Win slug. Maybe I should include it tomorrow for recut in the package to NEI.
