I have a Winchester 86 in 40-82 that I would like to have relined. Originally made by Winchester with a 1-28 twist, liners seem to be made with a 1-16 or 1-18 twist. I will shoot cast bullets mostly and would like to know if the original 260 or 280 grain (BACO)bullets will stabilize with the faster twist. My other question is, if I'm using a .407 or .408 diameter bullet, what would be the proper bore and groove liner to buy? Thanks for your help.

I dont know about premade liners, I use a smith in Helena, Montana, at Capitol Sports, Arnold, he uses a barrel, turns it on a lathe, bores out the old barrel, and slips them together. A little more to it than that, but, possibly you can find a twist a little more to your liking. My experience has been the faster the twist the longer the bullet needed to be.
My highwall 45-100 was a badger "liner" with 1-20, shot the 405s better than the 525 grain bullet, I feel the 1-18, or even faster, may have stabilized the longer bullet a little better. Then again, the "short" 405s shot quite well.
I have mentioned in another post I use the Greenhill formula to some degree, maybe that will help you.
Good luck

The original loading was a 260 gr lead bullet at 1480 fps and it stabilized in the 1;28 twist, so the same bullet should be fully stabilized in the 1;16 or 1;18 at less velocity. It looks like you want a .406" diameter liner. The faster the twist the longer/heavier bullets it will stabilize and a 260 gr .408 bullet isn't very long and would bet the 16 or 18 would stabilize at subsonic velocities.

open this and have a look-I take it you have a bullet on hand to measure the length of, this will give you a good idea of the twist needed http://kwk.us/twist.html

Something I should add is that for all practical purposes a bullet that is fully stabilized at muzzle exit will remain so to target as forward momentum(velocity) decays much more rapidly than rotational momentum, there are factors that can affect this -nose up flight("overstabilization at extreme long range) and transition from supersonic to subsonic but this is not going to affect you with your 86 hunting rifle.

Talk to Mike at TJ's Liners - he has various twist rates

I wonder what the twist was used for the light weight boolit in the express cartridges back when.

For the whale of it went to GM, was surpised at the very slow twist of their barrels for the .50 express.

Made for the .50 Express cartridge as used in the 1886 Winchester .50-110. These barrels are cut rifled to a 1:54 twist.

Bullard Boy, pay attention to what SWheeler says here.

I'd also like to second the reference to Mike at TJ's liners, I can dig up his address and possibly a phone # if necessary, and I'd also like to mention our fellow member John Taylor who is an absolute artist when it comes to installing and chambering liners.

I just slid a liner into a ml project that Mike hammered out for me. My second.
I happen to have his flyer right here

Seeing how many gunsmiths still line barrels in the US, I am salivating of envy here in Canada. Most gunsmiths either retired, or moved onto installing custom triggers in 1911s. :(

And the new crop of parts changers aren't worth the shop rates they charge.

Not sure what I'll do when my gunsmith retires...

If I figured it right, with a bullet length of.908, a diameter of .408 and a velocity of about 1375 the twist should be one in 24". If as I've been told, your groove should be 2 thousandths smaller than your bullet, should the liner groove be .406? Let me know if this is right. Mike doesn't show this size on his list. Thanks to all for their help.

T.J.'s has a 1 in 24" twist for the 40 cal. liner. I have used more than a few. Bore is .400" and groove is .408". OD is 5/8"
