What is a BFR 500, 10 in barrel worth.
There is one listed on craigslist for 575 with 2 boxes of shells.
It sounds like a good buy, if someone was looking for one.

Well, 2 boxes of shells is $120 right there. Sounds like a good deal, if you want a gun that you need and accessory sling and a pack mule to lug around.

the 500's are actually pretty popular here. You used to see the BFR's at fred meyers all the time, they stock more smiths nowadays.

i didn't think Craigs list allowed firearms.

They don't but you can list them, anybody can flag them, but doesn't for the most part around here. There are some nearly any day.

I wonder if it's a 500 S&W or a 500 JRH. Probably a 500 s&w I bet.

I would look for the .500 JRH. Much better then the S&W.

Um, why? Not being a smartazz, just genuinely curious. Have a JR S&W 500, and love it.

The add doesn't say. The two boxes of ammo is called high grain thunder makers, if that means anything.

Smaller, lighter gun, same boolit weights, less powder, easy to work with and about the same recoil or less. Enough velocity to kill any thing on earth.
I have shot the S&W's and the big BFR .500 S&W and I enjoy the JRH more.
All are accurate but the JRH would be better for a shorter barrel too.
It is a shorter .500 S&W case.

I believe you are right on the money with the JRH. It would be better suited for a shorter barrel, and would make for a dandy packin pistol. But I came across my S&W at a Fred Meyer for a deal I could not ignore. Almost half the price of a JRH? I can deal with 1.1" longer cylinder for that. I also do not load my 500 to its full potential either. I use a lot of 4759 under heavy boolits, and it is VERY accurate. I can't wait to get back and take it hunting!

I wonder if a Super Redhawk could be made into a 5 shot JRH? Cut it to 4" and I think you'd have something.

Of course it can. Jack Huntington has built them. I have an SRH in .500 Linebaugh, and have had one in .475 Linebaugh. It's a good platform for these big cartridges.

Very, very accurate too I might add.

How does the recoil in a jrh compare to a 44 using 300 grain boolits.

The JRH is a considerable step up. Not even in the same ballpark -- assuming top-end loads.

From the formulas I've seen, the .475 is about 2x a standard .44 mag load for recoil. That would be with the .44 in something the weight of a M29 and the .475 in a BFR. The .500 JRH shoots a little heavier boolit at the same speed as the .475.

How long of a bullet will fit into a JRH? I had mountain molds make a long nosed 550gr boolit for my 500 S&W and I was just curious if it would fit.

BTW, the nose is .680".....

The BFR cylinder is about 1.9" IIRC. JRH case is 1.4", so about a .5" nose would be it at most. Probably more like a .45" nose just to be safe.

I think the JRH is really happy in the 420-440gr area. But I'd bet you could make a 500gr shoot OK.

What do your revolvers chambered in 500 JRH weigh? Just curious.

With the Ultra Dot it weighs 4-1/8#. Subtract 6.1 oz for the dot, rings and the weight of the base?? Maybe a few more ounces.
It is actually more pleasant to shoot then my .475, seems to have less wrist twist from the bench but off hand I can't tell any difference.
Shooting the big BFR in .500 S&W needed me to put a glove on, my knuckle was getting banged a little.

I believe they weigh right around 3.5-lbs.

The John Ross Performance center 500 SW Mag weighs 3.5 pounds.

Um, JR .500 Smith weighs 57 oz. That's um, lets see. about 3.5 lbs.

Apples to walnuts -- a 4-inch X-frame weighs that little. I'm sure if the BFR were cut down to four inches it wouldn't weigh more than a typicl Ruger SBH. I have a 6.5-inch .500 Smith and it definitely weighs more than my BFR in .500 JRH -- much worse when loaded.
