I have been burning through a lot of 2400 powder and have seen WC 820 and WC297 surplus powders available at a pretty good price. Wondering if anyone has experience or opinions on these powders? I would like to use them mostly in .357 Magnum .45 colt and .327 Mag.

I am familiar with working up loads using surplus powders for .223 and .308, just curious if anyone has tried these powders?

Where are you seeing 820 at a good price?? Yes 820 is great with the .357 mag.

Jeff Bartlett has it for $100 per 8 lbs. Not as good as it used to be, but still not bad.

I use alot of both. There both good powders. I use more 820 then 297 but the 297 really shines in the 454, 475 and 500 linebaughs. Ive also found it to be hands down the best powder in my 50 beowulf and its a top choise for the 22 hornet too. I was using lilgun in the beo but ran out one day and tried 297. I went to the range the next day and found the 297 not only shot better but after 8 quick shots you could about light a cigerette on the barrel using lilgun and with 297 i could still put my hands on the barrel. the differnce was DRASTIC! I bought a pile of both back when they were a bit cheaper. At a 100 bucks a keg id probably replace 820 with aa9 next time but theres still nothing to replace 297 comercialy. I still have 4 kegs of it but i sure wish the money situation was better right now as i know im going to kick myself in the but down the line for not buying more of it.

Wc297 is running $90 at Pats. I was thinking of picking up 6 jugs if I get the warm fuzzy on it. If nothing else I am sure it would be fine in .357 mag and .30 carbine. Powder just keeps going up and up and up.

Ive used alot of surplus WW 820 over the years probley over 25 lbs and still have a good supply squirreld away . when we bought it the going price was about $7.00 a pound, about 15 to 20 years ago. We drove to Pats Reloading in Ohio and bought it direct from him no haz mat or shipping fees.
It has proven to be very accurate for me with cast or jacketed bullets in these calibers,
22 hornet , 30 carbine , 30/20 , 38 super , 357 mag , 44 mag and 454 casull.

820 is good stuff, never tried 297.

I assume slightly slower than 296. Is that correct?

Powder didn't go up, our money went down......sad to say.

real close to 110/296, much closer in fact then 820 is to it. Just a smidge slower.

Yes very close to 296, and works very well. I agree 100% on the value of our money. Its a darn shame.
