I have been knocking this around for 2 years and am still wanting to do it.
Lost my Gunsmith so will have to look for a new one.

I want to do a 30/40 Krag on a M95 Steyr action similar to the one Buckshot did!
Have been looking for a krag barrel for a couple of years.
Found several but all are junk in the first degree so have passed and kinda let it stew for awhile.
Would like to complete the project so SWMBO'd will stop looking in the safe to see how many new ones I have.

Since I have not been able to find a good barrel what 30 cal barrel would be a good replacement?
Does anyone still have 30/40 Krag reamers?

Interested in your ideas and the name of your Gunsmith

Any 30 cal barrel that is large enough on the breech end to allow cutting back and rechambering to 30-40 Krag.

Buy a contoured blank in 30 cal, have your gunsmith thread, chamber, crown and fit to your M95. Midway sells Adams and Bennet contoured 30 cal blanks for about 80.00 if you are on a budget.

I used an 03-A3 2 groove on my Martini and it worked out quite well.

the krag has a .980 shank and almost all the commercial barrels are bigger. mod 70 is only an inch so you probably would have to cut off the threads and cut new ahead of the old threads. rem 700 is big enough you could cut new threads under the rem threads, same for sav 110. you need a chamber that is small enough the krag would clean up, or a barrel that is .980 ahead of the chamber for .750. the krag is .457 at the base. the 06, is 470. however the 06 is only .441 at the shoulder. the .308 is .470 base with a .454 shoulder. you would have to elimate most of a .308 chamber, but an 06, you could save part of it. about .850 from the base the 06 should clean up. ball park figures, but close. a remington 700 take off barrel in 30-06 should work. I have a couple of model 70, 06 barrels that would work. they have the sears., ted williams name on them. front ramp sight and dovetail cut for the rear. inside is good, outside has considerable rust. rust can be polished off. 10.00 and shipping

The O.P. was wanting to put a barrel on his Steyr - not a Krag, nicht war?
