I picked up a coffee can full of cast for my 32 spl at a gun show for next to nothing. They are plain based boolits, and I'm wondering if I can run them fast enough to make clean kills on deer out to 100 yards. What kind of velocities should I expect to consider max?

Thanks GunnyJohn

For a one shot kill, 2100 fps easily. For all day shooting with slow powder, about 1600 fps. ... felix

1600 to 1700 fps will work well out to 100 yards. I have a good friend who shoots pure lead out of his 30-30 at 1700 fps on the crono and regularly kills deer out to 100 yards. As Felix said 2100 shouldn't be an issue. My friend could push his faster, and has but gets 1 hole groups at 100 yards with his 1700 fps load out of his single shot 30-30, so that is what he uses to hunt with as well. There is not much difference between a 30-30 and a 32.

Fellas, he is talking plain based bullets. One can push them to 2100 fps but inaccuracy and leading will be the result.

I would say 1,500 max to be accurate with no leading with a powder like 4198.

i'm with w30 here, treat it like a big revolver cartridge.

Guys I must respectfully disagree. The original 22WMR or 22Mag was loaded with a 40gr pure lead bullet and pushed at 2000 FPS. Hundreds of thousands of these rounds have been fired without leading up the gun. I doubt the 22mag would have been as successful as it has been if when it first come out it leaded up the bore. If a 22cal pure lead bullet can be pushed at 2000 fps there is not reason to think that a 32 cal lead alloy projectile can not be pushed 100 fps faster. Based on a mathematical percentage calculations if you glued a card wad to the base of the bullet to keep the heat off of it, 2600 FPS is not out of reach. If they have a reasonably good lube, the 22mag had paraffin wax. Depending on the weight of the bullet I would think about starting around 30 gr +/- of IMR4064 or IMR3031, but that is me.

Best wishes

I think it is important to note that Felix stated the 2100 fps load was for hunting, with a one shot proposition after sighting in. For regular range sessions he recommended 1600 fps loads. I'd suggest that if leading is a problem after one shot and cleaning, there is a barrel, lube or boolit problem, not a PB or velocity problem.

+ another. At 1500 fps they will kill deer out to the 100 yards the OP asks about. How well/quick depends on the deer and the bullet placement. Personally I would load them over 6 gr of Bullseye for 1100 - 1200 fps, excellent accuracy and a lot of fun. I'd get the RCBS 32-170-FN mould, cast the bullets of 50/50 WW+2%tin/lead, GC them, size correctly for the rifle, load to 2000+ fps over H4895 and not worry about " if I can run them fast enough to make clean kills on deer out to 100 yards." Then I'd go deer hunting:D

The OP asks about using a "can" of bullets that he bought. There are MANY variables in that can. Hardness, lube and size are three of them.

I think he needs to check out those things and then start low at about 13 - 1400 fps and I believe (if they fit and are hard enough) that he could get 1600 out of them. That could be increased to at least 1800 fps if he could find a good wad to use on the base (I make P-checks for mine). Hopefully, they weren't lubed so that he can put a good lube on them to start with. He needs to slug his barrel and measure the bullets first. If they're to small, he needs to just remelt them.
