View Full Version : Hunting lights

I have had several questions wanting a light for hunting purposes. Several requests have come in specifically for this:

http://www.elusivewildlife.com/index.php?section=22&p=productMore&iProduct=426

I can duplicate this setup literally down to the host body and the emitters. I will make a couple changes to their design.

On the white light - modes are High, Mid, Low, Strobe, SOS
On the red and green emitters, modes are High and Low only.

Please note, these are green and red emitters, not filters. This allows the transmittal of more light than you can get with any filtered design.

The kit would be :

Light body
3 pills - white, red, and green
2 batteries
2 cell charger
scope mount
barrel mount
pressure switch

The biggest difference in kit is mine lacks a cigarette lighter adapter, and my price.

My kit complete would be $130 + shipping (medium flat rate box) assuming we can get 25 buyers.

You ask gang, tell me what you think.

Hi Will,

As for white light output how comparable would it be to the earlier lights?

Thanks,
Mike

This one is a very different design than the earlier lights so its hard to compare. This one puts out less light in the overall, but is a design made for throw so it creates a small bright hotspot at much longer range than the earlier lights.

at short range, instead of lighting up a whole room like the original GB light, these will make a bright spot on the opposite wall about 2 feet in diameter. The room is lit more by reflection off that than spill.

I have attached a beamshot to show what these look like in white. Notice the very strong hotspot on the outbuilding.

These use an XRE emitter instead of the XML in the original. The reason for this is that throw or the distance you can transmit light is dependent on die surface brightness and reflector frontal area and the XRE has the highest surface brightness of any currently available LED that is realistic for use in a flashlight. You can find more details on this concept here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Etendue

Its a strange concept that an emitter that isnt as bright can put light out at a greater distance than one with more overall lumen, but once you understand that it is a function of surface area of the emitter, the smaller older die makes sense.

This design also runs at 700 mA to 1A depending on which emitter is in (Red is 700) so it lasts a good bit longer than the original GB Light on a single battery too.

A C-note cheaper, but still $70.00 higher than yours.

http://www.texasdirecthunting.com/se...-XLR250/Detail

Wilj, to be clear, the above kit, without one aluminum scope ring, mobile charger, but, *more* lighting options, and the 2400 milli amp hour batteries, correct?

Hamish the above kit is the version in green only which is why its a C-note cheaper. My kit doesn't have the cigarette lighter adapter, but does have the red and white emitters to change out as you see fit. I saw this kit too, (and quite frankly the $100 for 2 emitters is a bit steep).
And for the record, mine comes with the batteries as well ;).

Got'cha, count me in, please.

Funny, was at the Jackson, Tn. Gander store trying to pull the trigger on upgrading from the "crowd control baton" maglight a couple day's ago.

would an option to do the light only and in green only be a better bet? I cloned the kit based on requests but I'm wondering if anybody really cares about the Red emitter.

I'm looking for the whole kit, all 3 colors. Looking to invest in a *good* Flashlight first, then be able to use the same light in red for varmints, unless things have changed, and green is better for predator hunting.

I personally like the kit as is, as it can be moved from rifle to rifle, has 2 batt.s, and can switch from cap switch to pressure.

(Will, was looking for a possible change from white to green on the headlamp in the other thread for hiking in and out to the stand deer hunting. Apologize if my question caused any confusion. I still want one wether it can be green or white. I'm tired of these $20.00 pissant headlamps.)

I'd be interested in one but have a question would I be able to get a 240 volt charger

would you be willing to sell a stripped down version. I dont need mounts or another battery charger or more batterys as i bought 12 extras. Just the light and the emiters? Id be in for one either way but really dont need all the extras.

wiljen

240 volt charger isnt a problem.

I'll have to look at a stripped down version without mounts etc.

Being a novice at varmit hunting at nigh can you tell me to what distance these lights would be good to? Possible to shoot out to 100-200 yards with these in green or red?

Thanks

The green will throw farther than the red, just a matter of mechanics, but it should easily be good for 200 yards. The red should get out to 100 or so. (maybe a bit better, but to really see a whole target, not just eyes, at least 100).

Would these have a more condensed hot spot than the earlier lights with aspherical lens?

Yeah I would be in for at least one.

240 V charger is not a problem. The 30mm mount isnt either. The shipping to Australia is $48. (If you can find a couple buddies that want em too, I can get 2 or 3 in 1 box).

I would expect the throw to be best on white, 2nd on green and shortest on red based on the wavelengths involved.
