Has anyone tried black powder loads in the H&R single shot carbine?

Tried Pyrodex Cartridge, worked great with 50/50 WW/pure and Emmert's lube. If you have a red dot or optical sight, the smoke boiling up out of the chamber when you eject the fired case will make a greasy coating on the lenses that you will remember cleaning for a long time!

I gotta check the bore diameter on mine. Got a crazy idea about seating a boolit waaaay out to make room for FFFg and a waxed felt wad. I might even go off the deep end and figure out how to use a packed and carded case to seat a slug in the rifling.

I have with Pyrodex P (ok accuracy), shokey's gold (horrible), 777 (poor) and have used Goex fffg and ffffg. My .45LC Carbine hasn't tested any though, did most tests in my blackhawk. ffffg gets the nod mostly now as it's powerful and clean. ;)

Aw, Rick it'd be OK for those anatomically challenged pigs.

I have a low wall in 45Lc with 30 inch barrel that will do this regularly.

Don't know about the short NEF.

Damn SS why did you have to go and put a picture of that purty rifle up there. Before that I didn't even know that I needed one of those.

I like mine. With a 300 gr. Hornady xtp Magnum travelling at 1800 fps. there's nothing in north america it cannot topple and is accurate. ;) Dun get me wrong, I love my blackhawk too, but at 75+Yards, it's go to time for the carbine. ;)

Oh, and there's lots that use em in lever guns etc. Single shot is simply more simple. ;)

Bob,

You NEED one badly :D They weight less than 8 pounds, are slim and trim too. Think of it as a baby 45-70. Half as much of both powder and ball ...twice the fun.

What maker and distributor did it come from. I believe that C-Sharps is making them now as well.

While it may be a NO NO on this board the 45 Colt can be stoked to some pretty impressive numbers with smokeless and a 300gr slug. Even with BP in a carbine it will topple deer sized critters reliably. Lord knows how many families were fed with the 44-40 and 38-40 from rifles and these were also BP handgun cartridges.

Bob,

Mine is a Uberti. I have sized 360gr .458 boolits to .454 and seated them on top of 35gr of Swiss 1.5. It starts to get your attention with that load

That has to be a pretty long boolit, what kind of accuracy do you get with it and what is the twist rate.

I believe it is 1:16 and Greenhill's Formula says I can use up to a 1.93" length boolit. I need to shoot some more of them, but the first five i loaded went perhaps an inch and a half at 50...maybe a little better.
