I don't know about wet phone books but at 25 yards they will go through a 12 inch fir tree

Well it depends, are those Delta Junction AK phone books or NY NY phone books?

I'd stack them at least 24" deep to start with. 36" may be smarter.

dombra, I was going to suggest that you list the load, because out of the thousands of posters on this board, SOMEBODY would have loaded it and knew the velocity. But you say your powder "aint got a name." Himmel! Are you making your own?

.................The Sunar 410 is as I suspected a shotgun powder designed for the 410. See below:

http://www.kazanpowder.ru/product_powder_next_sunar_next_eng.htm

or:

http://expo.tatcenter.ru/eng/page-1401.htm

Index Sunar-410 PDP-410
Gauge 410 gauge shot 410 gun
Average speed at the distance of 10m (25m) from a barrel cut, m/s, minimum 290 470
Difference of maximum and minimum shot (bullet) flying speed, V m/s, maximum (probable speed deviation rv, m/s, maximum) 30 30
Maximum pressure, kgs/cm2 (Mpa), maximum 1000 98,1

Shot (bullet) mass, g 18,0 6,3
Powder packed density, g/cm3, minimum 0,650-0,750 0,650-0,750
(optional)
Charge mass, g (approximately) 0,85-1,05 0,70-0,90

.................Naturally when cut and pasted it didn't formate correctly, darn! Checking Hodgdon powder for the 410 shotgun they're showing 'Lil Gun' and H110 as propellants. I'm going to hazard a guess that your Sunar 410 is slower then Unique as both Hodgdons listed powders are much slower and are between AA#9 and 4227.

In the 8mm a common load of Unique is in the range of 10 to 12grs so your load of 13.0grs of Sunar 410 should be quite safe. Since I don't know exactly what your powder is like I hesitate to suggest you could safely go to a hotter load. In the 8x57 and that boolit weight, a good load with 4227 would be 21 to 22grs. But that is NOT a recommendation for Sunar 410.

Depending upon your experience in working up loads and watching for signs of high pressure, you could load groups of 5 cartridges increasing your charges 0.5grs at a time until you experienced pressure signs or your accuracy failed.

What are you using for lubrication?

Does your boolit have a gas check?

I just realized that I have been saying 8mm (8x57) but you have not said what cartridge you are using?

Maybe we can help? I've never sent any boolits to that part of the world yet :-)

well thanx for getting back-
the bullet is 175gr ww air cooled lee mold, using cearael filler + dacron, no GC-
before using it on game I just wanted to get an idea of how it would work- dont like the idea of just wounding game- I can still work loads up just figured if there's any sort phone book test out there to compare penetration etc..

ps
using beeswax ,tallow and parafine for lube-case is 57mm

.................I would not use a cereal filler at all. Your use of dacron should be OK, but as a rule (for me) I don't use it for powders faster then 4227. Your powder, Sundar 410 'MAY' be about 4227 speed. Using a boolit without a GC your velocity and accuracy may be self limiting to about 1600 fps. Alloy, lube, sizing, and barrel bore condition will be contributing factors. Since you have the Lee boolit mould, it's designed to take a GC. I would be happy to send you some to try.

If you had a slower powder and using a cast lead boolit with a GC you could easily reach 2,000 fps or about 670 meters per second. A 175gr boolit at 1700 - 1800 fps (550 m/s) would take a normal deer if placed correctly. An air cooled lead boolit of about 14 - 16 bhn hardness would be great.

PM me and we can see about sending you some GC's or boolits. To bad I can't send any powder :-)

thanx again- Ive made a punch to produce gc- the problem has been to find copper - thought of using soda cans but the ceareal filler just made things so much easier-
bore isnt very good at all so Im happy w what Im getting - Ill try to use gc and see what happens If I load it up till I feel I shouldn't go any faster do you think I would have 1700 -enough for deer?

...............I think 1700 fps will be enough for deer so long as it's a regular sized deer :-) and not a moose! Shot placement will be very important. The old 32-40 had aboutthe same ballistics you are talking about (165 - 170gr slug at 1650 fps or so) and it was considered a fine deer cartridge.

Get close, aim well!
