I've been casting and hand loading for 32-20 for more than 50 years. Today I picked up 2#'s of 5744 in new sealed containers for 10$ each. Looking in LCBHB#4, 5744 is listed for Lyman 3118(311008) in 32-20. Seems a mite slow, but I'm willing. I generally shoot Colt Army Specials and PPS revolvers in 6" and 4" respectively. My question:
Has anyone else used this powder in revolvers in 32-20???
Howed it work??? (sp)

I have never used 5744 in the 32-20, I do know it works great in the 357 mag 14 in tender barrel. JMHO

I'm going to give it a try. Wondering about others experiences.

IVe worked up some super accurate reduced rifle loads , but never saw anything spectacular that could not be obtained with other more traditional pistol powders in pistols .

I have used accurate 5744 in rifle (A good powder)

I wish that i could of find Powder for $10 a lb

Checked Accurate web site no data for 32-20

If you try 5744
you might only need a little amount of powder
it might be very position sentisive,
---- but never reloading the 32-20 I could be wrong

I think there are a bunch of other powders that can do a better job

The Lyman #4 has data, I'm going to try it. My problem with small charges of powder in 32-20 is that it is a long, narrow case, the powder strings away from the primer unless care is taken to tip gun up every time. Accuracy suffers from the powder being strung out. I found that Trail Boss gave good accuracy because it is bulky but velocity is low. The Lyman data will get velocity up and the 5744 fills the case well and still boosts velocity (book) with pressure logged as being 16,000. I like that for my old guns, my newest 32-20 being 1925. I'll eventually report back.

Greetings
I sure will be looking to see the results. My 1873 32.20 does OK with 2400 & Unique. But having 8# of 5744 in storage it would be another cartrige to use it in.

I will be looking on as well. Like Guesser, my revos are older critters--the Bisley Colt SAA was made in 1906, and the S&W M&P before WWII.

So, I tried it in a Colt PPS, 4". 1925 gun in really nice condition. Didn't chrono, but it was definitely faster than 4.0 gr. of Unique, tried shooting over a hundred yards to get a feel for elapsed time, the 5744 was faster to target. Minor unburned powder residue. Small pistol primers and ideal 3118, 115 gr. sized .313, 9.3 gr. 5744. No signs of pressure!! Data from LCBHB#4. Maybe a SPM primer, maybe a longer barrel, accuracy was acceptable, probably worth experimenting some more.

Interesting outcomes. This one will go onto my List Of Stuff To Try. Rem 6-1/2 primers might work, they really clean up flyers in the 32-20 and 25-20 rifle loads.

I think I'll try some too, going to be getting some 5744 to try in .38-40 anyway.

BTW Al (hijack alert) I have tried some SR4756 in the .32-20 and 5.4 gr is getting me 1140 fps from the 6 inch bbl with a pretty big ES and so so accuracy. It's new brass though and I'm hoping it settles down after the first firing.

I would be inclined to check my scale/measure calibration, Jay. Both Ken Waters' text and my experiences show 5.4 to 5.5 grains of SR-4756 giving ~900-950 FPS in a number of revolvers. Or, perhaps your chronograph is too close to the revolver's muzzle--1140 FPS is very close to the speed of sound, and you might be getting "false positives" from trans-sonic report impulses. 32 caliber revos can be blasty beasties.

Anybody tried Lil Gun? It can be loaded down and still ignite well, so it should be possible to make moderate pressure but higher than std velocity loads???

Thanks Al, I was thinking they were pretty hot, and they feel that way. I'll check the scale.

We now return this thread to it's original purpose :)

I love resurrecting an old thread. lol Anyway I was looking for a pic of the 32-20 load data out of the Lyman 4th edition. Wanting to go through and find some loads I like. Email is taker73044@gmail.com

5744 is great stuff, but I had horrible luck with it in my .32-20 (ish) blown out Martini Cadet. Way too slow even in a rifle barrel with a lot of unburned powder left behind. Can't imagine it being right for a revolver.

When western took over the powder: they said don't use it in small cases anymore. (357 magnum 32/20) works great in 308 winchester and 300 winchester magnum.

I never got around to trying 5744 in rifle or revolver 32/20 WCF loads. Since my last post in this thread, my old stand-by for 32/20 reloading--IMR's SR-4756--has been discontinued. I have given Herco several test drives in 32/20, and it has done almost as well as the 4756. Herco seems about 5% 'faster' per grain than was 4756--my pet load (gleefully stolen from the late Ken Waters) of 115 grain castings ahead of 6.0 grains of 4756 is duplicated velocity-wise by 5.7 grains of Herco. These loads have given me 900-920 FPS from the 5" barrels of my Colt Army Special and S&W M&P, and about 1200-1225 FPS from the Marlin 1894CCL. Basic blackpowder velocities, IOW. I usually cut all loads for the now-departed Colt PPS by 10% of what got loaded in the medium-frame revolvers.

9.3 X62, that's interesting, about the 4756. I happen to have a surfeit of that powder. I shall have to try it.

Unique is my go to powder in 32/20 TC. Always worked great
