Wondering what it is that casters use to color their Lube with? Would like to hear what you use. Sendaro

Personally, I just use Alox so I don't need to, but I've read (here) that many use crayons

When I was making various batches of experimental lubes a couple of years ago my friend requested I color them differently to tell when one was out of the sizer and the other began. I stopped at AC Moore and bought a few different colors of Yaley liquid candle dye. A few, maybe several drops per pound of lube made for a deep color in most cases. Green was very deep, I remember having to use more red as my first batch came out pink. [smilie=l:

Now that our formula is selected I do not bother coloring it.

My lube comes out brown because I use 45/45/10 from Recluse's formula. I made up some of it with beeswax and it is a nice brown color. BC

I have been using home made lube for 50 years and it has never occurred to me to color it. I see no reason to spend the time and that little bit of money to make it some color other than what it is.

Heat. Mine turns dark brown from melting it. Maybe I should try a black crayon ...

After the boolit is loaded I can't see what color the loob is anyway...

While there is no practical value to coloring the lubes, it sure does make it easier sometimes to see if there are any voids in the lube grooves...Ray

If you make different formulas it's nice to color code them to tell them apart. I just drop a couple of crayons into the pot.

I use crayons, and once, some shoe polish.

Lube is OD green.

The only reason that I want to color my lube is to be able to id it as I try different formulas. I"m still testing different lubes, and learning as I go along this adventure into the past. My casting is for old single shot rifles. At present I'm working with a Stevens 44 in 32-40. The rifle shoots way better than I thought it would. It is truly a bunch of fun and learning.

Camo. So the deer don't see it coming. That's just too funny.

I use Yaley Solid candle dyes from Michaels or Hobby Lobby . Mostly just because I cannot help myself and color does make things easier to see for me.

Because the lube groves on Lee boolits is so small I sometimes throw a crayon in so I can see if my boolits lubed or not with my old eyes

It has been my experience that crayon colors do not mix well with my concoction. I had heard or read that crayons also aided in keeping the mixture from tending to separate into its components. White crayons separated into a thick "goop" that floated to the top of my mix. pain in the behind.

+1 on the candle die. Got it from a friend who is a candle maker. She orders it online.

Serious answer HERE from my previous thread on this subject: (http://castboolits.gunloads.com/showthread.php?t=139268)Have Mercy. Baby Blue Boolit Loob (http://castboolits.gunloads.com/showthread.php?t=139268)
I found an interesting product at the local A.C. Moore craft store yesterday while I was in there buying a new, larger wooden ball for my Lee press.

This is a first try, end result, of a wax candle coloring tablet concentrate (http://www.acmoore.com/popup.aspx?src=http://images.acmoore.com/productimages/207/207672.jpg). It comes in a small 2"x3" square and you're supposed to break off a chip and add it to your wax base and add additional color chips until you reach the color of blue you prefer.

I added 2 chips to the brew I had on the stove and it looked really dark blue in color when melted, but, when it cooled it turned out to be baby powder blue.

The concentrate is supposed to color a full 5 pounds, but, I don't see it happening. I have to assume that either the beeswax or crisco caused it to turn out powder blue.

In other news. I noticed that the A.C. Moore also sells a 1 pound block of beeswax based candle wax for $5.59. It comes in 4 squares, but, it is a 1 pound box of beeswax.

I have 4 Grandchildren and every time we eat out, I get a pocket full of crayons for free. Mostly red, green, orange and yellow. I scored 16 today at lunch, and I picked up four more off the floor.

Liquid candle dye is what I like to use, it also works well for dying two cycle gas oil mix if the oil does not already have dye in it as most do. I like to dye my lubes red or green or blue so I can tell them apart.

color ? perhaps "tint" is more apt ? lolz one crayon indeed barely tints a pound of lube , looks great in the pan melted and way way lighter in a cake/stick and semi translucent in the groove ( my green goo turns a weird luminescent pale lime-ish ummm tint ) a note on crayons ... not all are equal nor all wax , the non-toxic ones for example or maybe i'm thinking of the so called washable ones ? crayola brand are fair depending upon color ( some colors work better than others and this includes both dyes and crayons ) rose art ones also seem to work but there are other brands etc , a note about colors ... some color's use pigments that i'm pretty sure i dont want in my bore , lyman uses/used to use lamp black which is basically carbon soot ( and blacker than a moonless nite ) shoe polish will also add both tint and wax
