All right, this is the second trip to the range with my new me Rem 788 in .308 win. The first trip involved about 20 rounds that showed .310" appeared to be a good starting spot for diameter. Today I fired 79 rounds and after several tight patches almost no lead came out of the barrel. In addition accuracy stayed consistant from start to finish, so I would call that a good start.

I'm trying to attach photos, and it usually gets the better of me. If they appear I will continue.

Wow, got it on only the second try!!!

As stated before, this is the second trip with this rifle, and the first to really try for accuracy. I put 79 rounds through it today and after cleaning got almost no lead, so I would say I am starting out good.

Rem 788 .308 winchester - 1:10" twist (measured) - 22" barrel - 1981
Tasco 3-12x40

Boolits - 50/50 soww/coww water dropped - sized @ .310" - bhn 15/16 - lubed jpw/lla/tbring(tacky) - hornady gas checks

Winchester brass (most neck sized) - winchester lrp

All boolits seated no deaper than the crimp groove (312-185 only one seated to crimp groove)

necks flared and crimped enough to remove flare (no m-die, yet)

A couple observations:

The 200 grainers nose measure .299 x .302 and engrave on the nose when chambered. Best accuracy was 5 shots @ 100 yds - 1 5/16" (+/-) 28 gr. imr4895 w/dacron. 29 gr. w/dacron gave 5 shot @ 200 yds. 2 3/16"(+/-). Groups with 30 - 32 grains all opened up to 2" range @ 100 yds.

160 grain boolits are interesting. 20 grains 5744 would clover leaf at 50 yds. for 5 shots, open to almost 2" @ 100 yds. and over 5" at 200 yds.

The 185 grain boolits were even more interesting. The nose on this one is very round @ .302, and will engrave on chambering. It is stiff to turn the bolt, but it will chamber when seated to the crimp groove. With 13 gr reddot I got extreme vertical stringing. @ 100 yds. it strung almost 6", @ 50 yds. all shots were touching straight up and down, one shot on top of the other. Both groups(?) started at the top and went downward.

The soupcan boolit was seated on 8 gr. red dot. This was no good all the way around, 50 yd groups were @ 3", 100 yds was close to 8".

There are things I 'know', things I 'think I know", etc. At this point I am happy with this as a starting point, but always want better accuracy and consistancy. The knowledge here is staggering. I would appreciate any and all ideas, thoughts and suggestions as how to improve from this point. I started with a 45/70 which was very user friendly. Went to 44 mag/45 colt and ran into more issues which caused problems, but have addressed most of those. It seems as I go down in diameter it gets more difficult(I won't even discuss my .222 at this point, also a 788).

Educate me, please. Thanks to all in advance

Thus the reason for the post!!! I have three 788's(.222, 22-250, and .308). What these will do with jacketed is eye opening to most people. This rifle will do 5 150 gr roundnose under an inch @ 100 yds with 3031. Lots of room for improvement.
