Don't have my data handy, but if memory serves, I'm shooting a 190 gr 8mm Loverin design sized for my bore, LLA lube, GC, with about 13 or 14 grains of 5744. Don't go by memory alone and check out the load first, but that's what I'm shooting and it's a dandy. Very mild and I'm sure faster - harder loads are available.

See, I told you not to count on my memory. Not 5744 but rather 4227. Sorry about the bad info.

I shoot Schuetzen with one, 203 Borden, 208 Hoch, at .323" breeched with 14 gr. 4227 and a pea of kapok. 13 and change on chrono. Usually pop <1.00" @ 100 10 shot groups. Gtek

I have three of them and shoot my design boolit with the mold cut by Accurate mold, it is 32-170B. What type of rifle you gonna use?

Marvin, what are you shooting that boolit in ? I've been looking at it on Tom's site. I just picked up my 1893 marlin today, it's a 32-40, & have a C Sharps 1885 in 32-40, looking for a boolit that might fit both,ya I know fat chance [smilie=l:.

13 - 14.8 gr of 4227 with a breech seated 185 to 210 gr bullet is a very good load as is 12.5 to 13.5 of 296/H110. I use pistol primers for both. 4759 in 12.2 to 14 gr is another good load best with only Rem and Fed pistol primers.

A good fixed load would be 1/2 to 1 gr less of both those loads. Load the fixed as far out as you can. For bullets in the 165/170 gr use the low end of those charges.

That one was made to fit mod 94 Winchesters. I have two 1923 mfg 94's and when crimped in the crimp groove it just engraves the rifling but chambers easily. I also have the 1885 Win limited that it works well in. It is basically a copy of the SAECO tapered without the taper and a gas check added. I had a lot of problems with other molds having too fat and long noses to chamber. It would be nice if you could do a chamber cast and select a mold based on that. I think Marlin's have a more generous throat area.

For a light cowboying load I use 13.6 grains of 2400 and a small pistol primer behind a 165 gr. cast boolit. It's just enough to thump a skunk off the tractor. I like the 165 grain cast over 25 gr. 3031 with a Remington 9 1/2 primer for an all purpose load. 2660247 is the number for that lyman mold. I'm reading up on paper patching right now to see if I can get all the potential out of this cartridge. I know a lot of guys with single shots perfer a heavier boolit, but I'd suggest giving the 165 gr. a try before you make up your mind on what's right for your rifle.

Marvin s would you belive that that's the mold I have been looking at on accurate molds all this week 32-170B I think that's some thing I may go with. I also like the NOE 326407 185 FN looks a lot like the harry pope design but its out of stock. GD

Often wondered if anyone else would try it. I need to get the Hi-Wall out and work with it and that mold number some more. So far I have used the RCBS 170 the LEE 8mm and RD 32170.

For a BP load that you can shoot w/o cleaning or blow tubing. Use a soft lube like Emmert, 6.0 gr 4759, Rem 2 1/2 or Fed 150 primers, fill to base of bullet with FG or to the top of case BSed, use a grease or fiber wad.

Back when I had my old highwall with original barrel I loaded the tapered 200gr Saeco over ffg. The boolit was seated so that it barely engaged the rifling when thumbed into the chamber.

Need to clarify. Several folks here and on the linked ASSRA discussion mention using 4227. Would that be Hodgdon's H4227 or IMR 4227? I am not sure about using one for the other.

I am just starting to work with a Falling Block Works Model J action with an unknown barrel that measures 316/324 with a 1:10 twist.

I have a quantity of AA Data Powder 2200 that works great in 38/55. Could that be scaled back for use in 32/40?

Shooting a 1920's vintage Model 1894 Winchester I use a Lyman 321297 without the gascheck, shot as cast at .323" pan lubed with Bullshps NASA lube. 14.0 gr IMR-4227 and a CCI large rifle primer in modern Winchester short cases for my every day load. I have not chronographed it but I would estimate 1450 fps. 2 1/2" groups at 100 yards from casual rest with a Marbles tang sight and a Lyman globe front.

I use a 200 gr bullet from Montana Bullet Works, use 5744 powder and Fed 210 primers. Shoot it in an Encore barrel.

RAFE COVINGTON,

About what would be minimum and maximum loads for 5744? What load are you shooting?

The Accurate Powder manual did not have load data for a 200 gr. cast bullet, just data for a 170 gr cast bullet. The data for the 170 gr. bullet is 18.0 gr to 20.0 grs of 5744. I am shooting a 200 gr. bullet in an Encore bull barrel, I started out with 15.0 grs and worked up to 18.0 grs as my working load. I can't tell you the velocity as I haven't checked it, it is very accurate. JMHO
