Got me a M39 finally, I think I'm going to really like this gun. I've searched the web and am growing tired! It's a hex receiver with NO tang date. You know, on the underside where it usually is. There is what I think is a Tula hammer and under that a large capital "A" with maybe a small "r" after the A, like this...'Ar', only the r is a little weird. Hex receiver with no date? Anybody got a clue? Tried the MN sights, couldn't find it.

Sometimes the Finn's removed the date stamp under the tang when they were rebuilding them. Not that uncommen to find them that way. The toolman.

maybe that "r" is a russian letter "г" ( sounds like G in Garry)? thats all I can think of.

You always see the"r" after the date on Mosin Nagant rifles. The dates on my rifles are like 1939r, 1943r, etc. I read why a long time and can't remember what the explanation is now. It's a Russian thing.

It could be that the A on the tang of your rifle is part of a mistruck date. The tang on my Model 39 has the symbol for the Sestroryetsk arsenal and 96r for the date.

well thats simple then Shepherd2, that "r" stands for "год" translates to year.

Thanks for the replies. It's definitely an "A" with no date. It appears original, but who can say with these old MNs?
