I have both a Lyman #357446 and a 358156 SWC (non-hollowpoint) mould, and while I appreciate the 358156 GC being good for keeping the leading down how did it stack up against the old 357446 bullet which I had heard was supposed to be the cat's butt in the early days of the .357 Magnum. The weight is pretty close, when using wheel weights my 358156 drops bullets at 157-158 grains and 357446 about 160 grains. I am wondering how one would be vs the other say when used on deer sized game? Why does it seem that so few use the 357446 if at one time it was such a good bullet?

There are several threads that talk about the 358446 ... do a search for "358446."

Short answer, they do not perform well (accuracy) at slower speeds. You gotta put the gas to the floor on them and you may find a decent load for it.

I am having success with 14.0 gr of 2400 out of my Ruger GP100 6"

David, Unload the 357446 and have the 358156 hollowpointed and at the same time have the GC shank removed and you'll be a happy camper with the results./beagle

Correct me if I'm wrong......but isn't #358446 out-of-print? THAT could have an effect on popularity. :)

I don't believe I own a 446, but everything I've seen here indicates I'm not missing anything by not owning one. The 477 seems to be a much better design.

I owned a 357446 but I didn't own it long.

& a SC HP done by Buckshot

Look at the IDEAL boolit , see the front band is wider ??? it does better at lower speeds than the Lyman boolit .

358466 has two dinky lube grooves like the Lee 150-SWC. I personally prefer the 358477 style, but the 358477 has the rounded loob groove. I prefer a square lube groove. If I were using a lube-sizer I'd want a boolit like the H&G 51.
Since I tumble-lube I like the Lee SWC with the smaller pair of lube grooves.

I just picked up a 446 for chits and giggles to try in my Baby RB, 357Mag.

it appears it should clean up pretty good.

I like the idea of the PB so I can seat out as far as needed.

I kinda wish I hadn't sold my RD357 PB 6C mould.... but hey, someone else is getting to use it.
