A friend gave me a bag of range brass today that he said he picked up during a handgun training class. While sorting it I found a few 9mm empties that are a little scary. I can't imagine how someone could have shot these and not known there was a problem.

woah is the rim shoved over in a direction seperate from the body of the casing

The primers look just fine and the separation is in a pretty unconventional spot. I wonder what caused that?

One more reason the brass I pick up at the range tends to go into the scrap bucket.
Many people leave brass for only one reason, it is too far gone for reloading.

Wonder what those were shot in?

some people just abuse 9mm's. Some of the most screwed up brass I've seen is 9mm, especially the ones that were fired in a .40!

Hot reloads in an unsupported chamber. Surprised there isn't soot on the cases where they cracked.

The crack is in the wrong spot, the primers are fine and there isn't any bulge.

ETA, upon further review there does appear to be a slight bulge...

Makes me wonder if the brass was manufactored too thin in the web area. And then may have been reloaded numerous times. I have some WW brass and none of it has flash holes that look like the middle case in the picture. I looks "burnt" out. Maybe from being reloaded to many times?

If I were to make a guess I would say they were hot reloads shot out of a Sten.

You wanna see scary? find the range brass 9mm that was shot out of a 40 S&W glock.

No, I'm not joking. it took at least 5 rounds before the shooter realized something was wrong and started to investigate.

Almost as bad as that .40 that gets shot in a .45.

I was buying some .41 Mag brass, and found 13 in the bin that were strangely bulged above the web, and the bulge went all the way to the case mouth, which still showed a good bit of crimp. Looks like someone was shooting them in a .44.

A lot of the IPSC shooters shoot 9mm major with a heaping caseful of Ramshot Silhouette powder and just leave the brass on the ground. The cases usually are only good for one loading, so almost all the 9mm brass I pick up is saved to swage bullets with or to take to the scrapyard. I'd have to say those were shot in a .40 chamber though.

Funny thing is, there were some .380 cases mixed in that were bulged badly and the case mouth looked larger than usual.

I asked my friend who picked them up if anyone in the group had been shooting a Makarov. He say Yes, there was one young guy who had some kind of Makarov pistol, but it kept malfunctioning and he couldn't figure it out.:)

Then there was the time I picked up a Femaru that was supposed to be a .32 Auto... those cases did strange things in the .380 Auto chamber! :veryconfu I always read the caliber on the gun myself after that experience!!

Look at how old, degraded & stretched the bottom of those cases are. They never should have been reloaded let alone shot. Those cases were defiantly corroded in the past, look at the pitting on them. The one case has been stretched so much that the wall of the case doesn't have a bevel anymore for the extractor to be able to grab the rim.
