This is the stuffing out of the dog's toy that they shreaded, does it look like it would work as a filler? The tags do not have anything on them about what the material actually is so I took a picture, not a good one but a picture.
I couldn't believe how much of this stuff was in that little squeaker.

Looks like poly filler to me. I use in over 16 grains of Unique and a 400 grn cast bullet in my 45-70. Makes for good fun at the range without kicking the cr*p out of you.

Try a lighter to it and see if it melts...if it's poly it should melt easily

It is poly filler.

Thanks guys, I wasn't sure if it was the same thing or not. I hit it with a lighter and it burned and melted into a ball of nothing in no time.

Looks like the stuff I've tried from a quilt store. I like how you can roll it into a ball stick it in the case and it expands in a short time. I have some test loads with it to try but this winter in Alaska I spend all my time working and shoveling snow. It might be late spring before the road to the range is open.

So, from what I'm understanding, the ignition of the powder charge completely, and instantaneously consumes the polyester, with no fear of barrel fowling from a "melting plastic?"
Correct?

I have found small pieces of burnt, but not completely consumed, poly. I've never found any traces of it in the barrel, though.

Roger that! Many thanks for the quick reply.

I've no indication of the dacron (polyester) fiber being "consumed" or "burned up". Rather I have found small chunks of it forward of the muzzle (clean floor of an indoor range). In tests of "how much is enough or too much" I have had it rain down when a lot was used in a case. My assumption is it is just blown apart on exit from the muzzle. After thousands if not a bajillion rounds fired with dacron in them over 42+ years I've never ever had any indication of it melting or found any residue of such melting in any bore.

Sounds good to me!

The Dacron reduced my standard deviation on the two loads I tried on the weekend.

I purposely made a point of being very careful to place the powder as consistantly to the rear of the case as possible. I wanted to give the cartridges without the filler as much of a chance as possible to be consistant.

The dacron sure makes it easier to get consistant results!

I will be trying dacron in my varget and IMR4895 loads.
The Imr4895 loads have huge vertical stringing, despite my efforts to control it! The target holes are grouped such that the width of the group is only .75" or less. The group dispersion is almost entirely veryical.
This was for six seperate groups.
.308win, #311299 & #311644. Sized .310".

Good to know...thanks Hunter. Vertical stringing is certainly load, while horizontal is all shooter. Never even thought about the dacron making loads more consistant, sure makes perfect sense now though. Thanks for posting.
