And here are the results.

The gun is a Marlin 1895 45-70 that I had a longer mag tube put on.
The bullet is a 400 grain tumble lube with a gas check.
The mold is from Tom at Accurate.
I started at 35.5 grains of IMR 4198 and it did a little better than the 36 grains I shot today. I shot the 35.5 the other night and did not have a camera.

What distance? Open sights from looking at the rifle.

Lucky you I have a Marlin Guide gun in my closet that just sit there. I always took this gun as a backup gun when elk hunting. I pulled it out last year and the rear sights were real fuzzy, so much that I could not aim with it. I guess my eyes are going so I am thinkig about a rear peep sight for it.

I have peep sights on any unscoped rifle. A good aperture sight is hard to beat.

My MARLIN lever guns need a LYMAN 66 receiver sight, a folder in the rear dovetail, and a #17 front sight that takes inter-changeable apertures. Add quick detatch sling swivels and I'm good to go.

Well when all my metal sights started failing I figure I couldn't just keep replacing them forever. I went with scout scope mounts on my .45-70 and .444 Marlins. Still very handy, balance is OK and accuracy is restored.

Damned cheap fuzzy sights anyway, huh?

I do believe that peep sights are in the future for this gun. I just started using a peep on my 54cal BP and so far I really like it. I can see a peep and High viz on this Marlin.

Looking good! Wish I could shoot open sights like that, mine sports a low-powered Leupold compact, 1.5-5 IIRC. My Winchesters get by with peeps but my GG is so accurate I feel it needs some good glass (with my eyes) to realize it's potential.

Nice shooting. I just bought a 1895 guide gun dec.31 and need to decide which mold to buy. I just bought a skinner express rear peep for it and took it to the range. Loaded 36.5 of imr4198 under 405gr gas check it shoots 10 inches high so i ordered a front sight to put on. Thought it would be here this last weekend, hope its here tomorrow. Man i can't wait to put it on and get to the range. Some time i wanna do like you did and put an extended mag tube on it too 8-)

I have the Ashley Ghost Ring (forerunner to the Skinner) and love it. I gives a clear picture and is much more robust than a Lyman or Williams. Ashley used to make a "try" kit so you could order the right height front sight.

I wasn't sure of which height of front sight to order , so i ordered the taller one ( .500 ) i figured i can just file it down to were i need it instead of ordering one and it be too low

My local smith charged me 135.00 for doing the extended tube. Parts labor and every thing.
