Would a short action M77 rebarreled from .308W to .244 Remington have any feeding issues due to the taper of the latter round? The 2.895" long magazine box is not an issue.

Thanks,
MJ

There should not be any trouble, the gunsmith will look that over before you ever get your gun back. It is like going from 308 to the 243 no problem

The 244 being built on the longer 7x57 Mauser it might have trouble.
308 is 2.015 long with coal of 2.810. The 244 is 2.233 and coal of 2.825 .
The longer case has tyha shoulder farther forward. This might give you some trouble. A good smith should understand this and know how to adjust the magazine to work.

The 6mm Remington has been offered in the Ruger 77 - call and see if the magazine box & follower are different.

Assuming it is a MK2:

Magazine Box - Short Action D22700 Specify Model & Caliber (except 22/250)

So the magazine box and/or follower would be the only thing(s) different? I was worried that the action rails might be machined a bit different going from the .308 family to the 6mm.

Did you get the info above from Ruger's website?

They may be, I'd suspect you won't have much, if any, luck getting an answer from Ruger on that one.

There seems to be some Ruger connected folks on here that may either know or can find out.

Back of the owners manual, parts listing. I had a 6mm MK2 10 years or more ago.

Doesn't look like they are chambering anything in 6mm Remington now.

I can't believe how few Ruger #1 chamberings there are doing now(haven't been on their website in quite awhile).

The cartridge guide lips on the M77 are pressed into the magazine box. There is no complex machining of the receiver as in the various Mauser actions.

Bill,

So dimensionally speaking, there is no difference among the short action M77 receivers that have a .470" bolt face?

I would actually expect that situation in order to control machining costs.

I have a Ruger M77 that started as a 6mm Rem. that was rechambered to 6mm-284. I then rebarreled it to 243 Ackley for a friend. I then traded for it and rebarreled it to 7mm-08 for myself. It fed all cartridges just fine. As mentioned above, if there is a problem, the mag box controls the presentation of the cartridge to the rails and can be adjusted easily.
