i have a rifle that is marked US SHARPS RIFLE COMPANY IN MERIDIAN CONN. caliber 45/70 goverment. this is a copy of the 1895 - falling block i believe. i am in need of the 2 screws that hold the sight on just in front of the rear stock.

i cant seem to locate the company for help. any one know the thread size or a phone number to the company?

Try to figure out as close as possible what the thread size is. I would guess 6X32 or 6X24 or 6X10. Get as close as you can. Try one thread and that will give you information on whiich direction to try next. Then call Brownells 1 800-741-0015, and ask to speak with a tech. That should get you the proper screws. There are filler screws you can get at a hardware store. The problem is you won't know until you try whether or not it is a SAE or metric thread.
Good luck

Best selection of small metric screws was my Ace Hardware store. As they are independents, may not be the same everywhere.

I think it should say "caliber 45/70 Government".

Go by a hardware store and pick up a 3,4 and 5 mm screw. See which one is the size of the hole. Next get different thread sizes of that screw. MM threads are USUALLY 20,24 32 or 36 threads per inch. After you have found the right pitch (size) and thread, get a couple of screws to fix you tang sight to the tang. You're ready to go. Let us know how it works out.

montana charlie as i stated, the stamping says us sharps rifle company caliber is 45/70 goverment

i do stand corrected its a copy of an 1895 - i believe falling block? the lever around the trigger pushes down and lowers a door to slide the shell in.

Try http://vtigunparts.com/ They sell replica parts, but many of them will fit originals....

Almost impossible to tell exactly what you have except that it is a 45-70 in some form of falling block action.

From a Sharps standpoint there was/is no model 1895. The original company was out of business by about 1881-2. And, Meridian Conn. doesn't ring a bell.

Given all that, if you simply want to mount a tang sight, your best bet is to find someone locally who can figure out the diameter, pitch, head style and length of the screws to use. Then get a couple of screws that will work. Cutting down the length or turning down the heads of screws if those dimensions are a tad too long, large is a simple job.

Well if it looks like the picture you posted it is a sharps rifle of some sort. I would be that it is an Italian import and probably an IAB made rifle as several importers imported them over the years. So you are looking at a metric thread for the sight screws. The only way is to get a sampling of them and try them as suggested by others in this thread. If the sight is a copy of an original it should have one screw and a dovetail. If it has two screws it is not like an original type sight.
