I'd like to start casting .405's for my 1895 Winchester and wondered if any of you have a favorite bullet type? I need an all around good bullet for hunting elk, deer, bear, moose. Any suggestions? I'd take a little pet load info as well if any of you big bore shooters have a favorite load.

The bullet that Lyman claims is the original...or at least the design that is supposed to duplicate the original is their #412263. It was last listed by Midway and is/was a two cavity configuration that weighs around 300 grains. A number of different powders will work well with this bullet; velocities in the 1500fps-1750 fps range are adequate for most hunting including the animals that you mention. If your 95 is in good shape you could possibly go as high in velocity as 2200fps for dangerous game, but the recoil would be significant. A 300 grainer traveling at that speed would also deliver around 3200 foot pounds of ME at the muzzle; that's over a ton and a half. It is more than adequate for any North American game. LLS

I've had good results witht the Lyman bullet using WW alloy, but leading becomes a problem with velocity above about 1,450 fps in a Winchester High Wall re-introduction. The gas-checked 320 grain flat nose from Accurate Moulds can stand higher velocity and is at least as accurate, maybe more so than the Lyman. Should work fine in a lever action.

I like the Lyman 412263 and use it over a charge of 5744 powder. I get about 1800 fps and am happy with the results.

Others have used a 350 grain boolit. A search should bring up the threads.

Accurate Molds catalogs the 41-320C gas checked design for the .405 Winchester. The great thing about Accurate Molds is that you can tell him what diameter you want the mold to cast.

The RCBS 416-350-FN works just fine and is readily available. I size ac ww to .413 and can easily exceed 2200 fps without excessive pressure or leading.

I will also reccomend the RCBS 350 grain gas check. Sized to .414 it is very accurate in four of the japchester 1895's we have shot quite a bit.

although i shoot a LBT 350gr. LFN out of mine, i have to agree with frank505. that RCBS bullet does shoot well. i also size at .414"

Thanks for your suggestions. I was leaning toward the 350gr.

I know this is an old post but I just bought an Accurate Molds 41-320C for my 2 .405 WCF's (Winchester and Ruger #1). It drops about 305 grains with linotype. I needed it to be .414 since the groove diameter is .412. Had to buy a sizing die from Buffalo Arms. This mold really solved the problem with the .405. It is very accurate at around 1500 fps. I could never get it to work with the Lyman 412263 or another mold I bought.
