I recently purchased several Ideal/Lyman molds, among them was a 311413 and a 311291, both single cavity. All of my casting to this point has been with Lee molds and mostly pistol calibers.

I'll be using these molds for a .308 and a 30-06.

Any info, warnings, load suggestions, etc. would be appreciated.

Thanks

Do a search on the forum on those molds and you'll find the 311291 is an awesome design for cast boolits and the 311413 is a good design as long as you keep the speed under 1600fps.

The 311291 might be a bit heavy for your 308, depending on what your barrel's twist rate is but will work fine in a 30-06 with a 1-10 twist barrel.

The 311413 is just as heavy as the 311291 but the Spitzer design works ok for both as long as you maintain your speed constraints.

Bruce has got it right.....

I also use these molds for my .308 and have found that the 311413 spitzer is a tricky one to develop an accurate load for.... and by all means use an M die

Well I have a couple of Lyman RB moulds I really like them . The thing that I have the most trouble w/is getting a pace when casting. It takes longer to get the iron warmed up than the aluminium. At least for me ,a stretch pause will let them cool to much so set them on the hot plate or pot edge.

Just my expirence w/a couple of RB moulds after a few years w/LEE moulds .

In reflection I have to run the iron single Lymans about the same way as my double 30 cal LEEs but it seems likthe Lyman moulds have a narrower working window.

yup as mentioned by Bruce and atr the 311413 is velocity sensitive to put it mildly.
the 311291 is an all around great design ,i use both in various 30's.
my ishy 308 likes the 311413 at around 1400 fps
the 311291 shoots great in my other 30 cals, no problem there.
i don't shoot a 30-06 so i cannot comment on that baby.

The 311291 is an extremely versatile boolit. It was originally designed for .30-30 tube-magazined lever action rifles, but it excelles in bolt actions, also. I shoot it (actually an older, single cavity Ideal 308291) in the Winchester Model 94 and the sporterized '03-A3. I've no experience with the 311413.

Any Lyman Cast Bullet Handbook or Reloading Handbook will supply plenty of recepies.

I appreciate the input from all. I do have a Lyman's Cast Bullet Handbook, but was curious about actual experience from the folks here.

I'll be shooting these in single shots. Handi rifle .308, CVA Stalker 30-06.
