Is there any difference between the new Lyman 358156 molds and the older Ideal molds of the same bullet?

I want to produce a bullet like Skeeter would have used.

Probably yes. They recut their cherries every so many moulds as they ware down. Over the years they get changed some and sometimes come out way different than the old original. Might be better off looking for and older one but I'm sure someone who has the mould will give you better info and can help you out.

Based on my experiences and most of what I read, Lyman's quality control isn't even close to what it was 25 - 30 yrs. ago ( and longer )

If you could find an older mold, you are much more likely to get one that cast a bullet that is within specs.
There are a lot of bullet molds leaving Lyman today that are throwing sub- sized bullets upon arrival with their owners.

During the past 6 yrs., I purchased 3 different Lyman 311284 molds, every one of them threw sub-sized bullets.
I bought an NOE, 311284, perfect bullets just as soon as I could clean and pre-heat the mold !

Yes, but the changes are usually so slight that they can be overlooked.

iv'e been thinking about buying the lyman 43 mauser mold but am very wary of putting up the money because of the negative revues about Lymans Q/C lately.
i am scouring all auction sites for an older Ideal 43 mold.
maybe i should give the new prodution mold a try and hope i get one thats on spec.

Find a bullet that meets the specs you personally need and send it to Tom at Accurate Molds. He can probably make you a duplicate mold that produces bullets specifically to fit your personal gun !

The designs have drifted around a lot, but it seems like the 358156 is one that has not changed all that
much. Most of the examples I have seen looked pretty much the same. For example, the 429421 and
452424 have changed dramatically over the decades.

I agree that the 358156 has not changed too much and that the 454424 and 429421 have been modified considerably !

All of the bullets in the photo are IDEAL/Lyman 454424s except the extreme right and left. The one on the left is a newer LYMAN 452424 and the right is the old CAT 454424 Group Buy designed by 45 2.1. The 452424 will not shoot well because of a seriously undersized front band. The 45 2.1 design is a great shooter for me ! :)

I have a SC Ideal 358156 and a DC Lyman from about 1973. The castings will interchange in the cavities, I know, not precise measurement, but it is a point of comparison. I have a 4C also, much newer, I have never tried it, casting or comparing.
