IMO 3031 is one of the best 3030 powders cast or j word

Looks like I better go out and finish setting the press up.
Thanks just what I wanted to hear. Have cast 180's.

Ditto, along with a 311041 from 50/50 WW-Pb water dropped and sized to a diameter that will just slip into a fired case from that rifle.

It has been my "go to" powder for the 30/30 since I started loading for it in the 60's.

Ditto on that. 3031 and RL-7 are my favorites for the 30-30.

I too use 27 grains of 3031 in the 30-30 with Lyman 311291 (311041 works well too). I started at 25 grains and worked up; 27 grouped the best for me. You can go as high as 30 or 31 grains and that gives around factory spec. LLS

I just worked up a load for my M94 using a gc'd 170 and settled on 26.6.

What the opinion on using 3031 in a 14" T/C contender with 150gr or 165gr cast to be used up to 200m for shilouette use?

The first caliber I ever loaded for was 30-30, and the first powder I ever used was 3031. Ever since, 3031 and 748 have been my predominant go-to powders for 30-30 use. There's 30-30 data for both powders in just about every reloading manual I've ever come across.

I don't use anything else in 30-30. I love the 173 gr. gas check of straight WW. I like Remington 9 1/2 primers and they do well. I'd start with 25 grains and work your way up until you find something your rifle really likes.

Sorry, I have to ask.

Is it possible to use magnum primers with non-max charges of 3031 for the .30wcf?

*edited to clarify question*

I would be interested in the answer to this myself. Using 3031, how low can you go?

I've used Remington 9-1/2M primers for years with mild loads because I have a lot of them. I've been loading 30-30 since 1972 and 3031 is my favorite powder for it by far.

3031 worked in all my 30-30 rifles just fine. Never even tried another powder. No need to.

IMR 3031 is the ONLY powder I use in both my .30WCF (.30-30 Winchester) and my .30 Remingtons as well as my .32 Winchester Special loads.

IMR 3031 was the go to powder in the 30 30 for decades. Magnum primers are ok but not at maximum loads. The old standby was reduce powder charge by 10%.

3031 is a versatile powder for most rifle loads. I used it most in 30.06, but it also worked well in 30.30 rounds I loaded a few times.

I had good luck with it in .233 and .308. Just ordered an 8 lb. jug for some 45-70 loads. With my cast shooters, 3031,Unique and 2400 would cover about everything.

Reduce charge by 10%, then work up the load until you reach the velocity and accuracy you want without signs of pressure.

My best accuracy 28.0gr with a Lee 309-170-FN (PC) 182gr RTL. 2000fps out of a 24" Savage 24F. I use 50-50 or RMR Core Lead air cooled.
