I am thinking about purchasing a 44 mag rifle and am looking for suggestions. Right now I am leaning towards a a Marlin 1894 SS. Is this a good choice or is there something better. I would like to shoot nothing but cast boolits in this rifle and would mainly use it for plinking. All help and or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks, Todd

I can't imagine how you'd do better than an 1894 Marlin for a .44 Magnum rifle.

Mine is fantastic with cast. This is one I will never part with.

I have a Marlin and a Winchester 94 Ranger Carbine in that caliber. Both shoot well and weigh about the same. The Marlin is perhaps stronger and operates a bit smoother. You can also get a 92 Winchester or clone in that caliber. However, a Marlin is really about as good as you can get in a lever action 44 Mag.

I have 3, 44 Mag lever guns; 2 LSI SS M92 Puma's and an 1894SS Marlin. The 24" SS octagon Puma is very accurate and the 20" carbine is very accurate but both of these have oversize bores @ .433"-.434" with a twist rate of 1:30. The Marlin 1894SS has a .429 bore and a twist rate of 1:38. The M92's are stronger and cost less money but the Marlin is made better and easier to clean. For standard 240 grain Cast Boolit loads the 1894SS is a better gun and will outshoot the Puma's with reduced loads.

If I could only have 1, it would be the Marlin 1894SS.

I'm really happy with my Marlin amd it works well as long as I feed it .433" diameter bullets . Mine has an old Williams reciever sight that helps my old eyes a lot .
I use the LEE two hundred grian "cowboy" bullet for plinking with a mild charge of Universal clays . For the heavy bullet , it's a two hundred fifty grain LBT design with gas check and a healthy charge of Accurate arms number nine .

Interestingly enough both loads work pretty well out of a six inch Smith too:Fire:

Ive got a 92 Rossi and it is an excellent rifle, but the sights are yuk for my eyes. Brass copoured front bead which disappears on me. Shot way too high with any lead boolit load I tried. Took the elevator out of teh rear sight (I noticed a few guys shooting these in cowboy did that), still shoots a bit high and I can't find it now. I have not had a good run with this rifle. Mechanically faultless, but the sights need upgrading. Got a nib 1894 Marlin coming. I will see how it goes and keep the better one).

You may read my comments on a post here called "Oh, Happy Day". I had some troubles with my new Marlin but have got it all worked out now. I really love the rifle now, too. Carries good. Fits me well. Shoots good. And I really like being able to clean from the breach end of it. If I couldn't have a Marlin I just wouldn't have a lever rifle.

I have 3 Marlin lever guns, a 30-30, .357 and the .44 (stainless). My advice- BUY IT!! You won't regret it!
