Hello all.

Recently borrowed a mold from a good buddy. It is an old 228367. i cast 200 yesterday of linotype. I rarely use lino and only have a small amount. But by my thinkin it should be so hard to shatter if it hits a rock while gopher hunting to reduce richocets. It is a plain base boolit and i plan to size to. 225" as I do my 225415's. 225415 gc shoot great at about 1900fps with 4198. my question is where is a good starting point with this plain base???

Also I have quite a bit of win 231 on hand. Never saw this used in rifle. Use it alot in pistol. Anyone ever try it in 223 with cast boolits??

Oh yes and this is used in a savage edge/axis bolt rifle.

try 1200 fps to start, and work up.
i'd just find data for other powders in the same fast burn rate range and go from there.

I've sized some 228367's down and shot them in my 222, but with all the other molds I have I never got back to it. I'm also not sure if you can get enough velocity as a plain base to get them to shatter, even as pure linotype. At least without using sone kind of buffer or something to protect the boolit base. Was your mold altered to make it a plain base? It is normally a gas check boolit. These are 228367's checked and sized through a push through die to .225. I would reccommend a push through for sizing. The nose on mine is fat enough and the throat on my gun is short enough that I had to seat them deeply to get them to chamber.

That should be a good bullet in ARs as it should be a GC'd mould? I shoot 225462s "as cast' at .227 without problems. Well worth a try. I'd start with 18 gr of H4895 and work up if a 12"+ twist is used? Bolt gun or AR? Twist?

Ya it is definitly plain base. Single cavity mold...makes great lookin boolits. It isnt my mold. Borrowed from a buddy but i thought a nice plinker with no gc for gophers makes a really cheap shootin round for my purposes.

As to my rifle it is a savage edge bolt action and a 1 in 9" barrel. it stabalizes the 225415 at 44 gr and should hopefully shoot these decently. They come out with lino at 53.5gr. And i sort withhin. 2 gr of 53.5gr.

Thanks for the replies so far. I just need to get a. 225 sizer this weekend so i can lube and shoot. i have a lee sizer in. 225 but i am not a fan of lla. Would much prefer my lyman lubesizer. Any thoughts on why to go witht he push through instead of the lyman???

Sounds like someone milled the gas check shank off of the mold. Mine weighs more like 60 gr.

I use a push through to size down, then lube in a LAM with an oversize die just to add lube. It adds more steps, but if I try to size down that much in my lube sizer I tend to distort the boolits quite a bit. Might not be a problem with lino, I can't say, but I do think push through sizing makes a better boolit. JMO though.

Ok, being a PB'd bullet changes things. Probably going to need to keep the velocity under 1500 - 1600 to maintain accuracy if in a 9 or 12" twist barrel. I use Bulleye and Unique for those loads and 231 is pretty close to Bullseye so I'll suggest starting at 3 gr and work up to 4.5 gr. With unique I'd start at 4 gr and work up to 5 gr.

That looks like a cool little boolit. Anyone ever try hollow pointing the mold?
