I have a Ruger stainless #1 I would like to shoot cast in, any recommendations on boolits and molds, would entertain paper patching as well, and could build my own swaging dies for smoothies

Yosemite,

I see you're relatively new to the site, welcome aboard.

I hate to admit it, but I've only put a handful of cast rounds through my Rigby and don't have any load recommendations. You should try a search of the favorite load forum as there are folks here that do shoot cast in both the Rigby and the Remington. Perhaps someone will jump in with some advice.

XMP 5744 55 grs. under RCBS .416 350 gr FNGC bullet for just under 2,200 fps. Cast of WW, bullets drop out at 365 gr. 50 grs. of same powder gives just under 2,000 fps. I get just under 2" with my Ruger 77 and CZ 550 at 100 yds for 3 shots.

Just go up to the "Search" tab on the toolbar.

Type in ".416 Rigby" and EIGHT PAGES of 'hits' will appear.

My own #1 .416 has passed the 1500-round mark long ago, and the vast majority of those rounds used the RCBS 416-350 bullet. I can say that this design will fulfill ALL your reasonable needs for a cast bullet in this diameter.

Best of luck, and welcome.

Yosemite,
I shoot cast bullets in both my .416 Taylor and .416 Rigby. My mould is a modified CSA mould that started life as a 410gr .410 diameter. Had a gunsmith friend open this mould up to .417". It is a big round nose with the cannelure in exactly the right place. Using an alloy similar to #2 , they weigh 425gr lubed and gas checked. In the Rigby I was using around 80.0 gr of AA3100...trying to keep air space to a minimum. Velocities are around 1800-1900fps.
I use the same bullet in my long necked Taylor as well. Sixty-two gr of AA4064 gives the 425gr bullet around 1900fps.
Both are good practice loads as they give considerable recoil and print very close to jacketed loads out to around 60yards.

As a reminder, these loads work in my rifles but might give entirely different results in yours. Use the charges I have listed with care.

Don`t have a Rigby, but I have a .416 Taylor. I was fortunate to acquire the 400 gr. mold from BRP before he closed. I shoot mostly RCBS 350 mold that "Buckshot" modified for me as a H.P. with an option of a plug that allows me to cast solid nosed bullets again. I have a custom PP mold from Richard Doughty that cast up a 395 gr. bullet using 50/50 alloy. I have been patching .41 cal. RCBS 300 gr. bullets that weigh 325 patched and sized .417". Haven`t been to the range yet with these due to falling off a ladder and banging up my right rib cage. There is no reason why you can`t use PP bullets in your Rigby as they can be driven to near jacketed velocities.Robert

Greetings,
I have a Ruger number one in 416 RCM with a 1-14 twist. It shoots very well with the RCBS 350 graine FN mold. I have been loading 60 grains of IMR 3031 for a velocity of about 2100 fps with the 24 inch barrel. No, I have not grouped it on paper, but it is very capable of killing a gallon jug at 100 yards. That is plenty accurate for the varmints I am after.

Thanks to Midway's sale I now own a 416 Taylor reamer. Now I just need a barrel blank, and a new rifle will be born soon. That reamer has a throat only .417", so I plan on using various BPCR 40 cal. boolits sized to .410" (Lee size kit available in that size) and paper patching them with onionskin to .4165". I have a RCBS 400gr. mould already and plan on having Accurate Molds make me something that casts out at .411", 350 grains, with tumble lube grooves for the patch to grab. I may get the RCBS 416 boolit mould in the future, but most likely paper patch ammo is mainly what I will fire in it.
