450 reloads

I would like to know if I can use any 4570 loads out of a manual for the 1895 marlin in my 450 marlin.
I want to load it down a little, thanks Steve!

The 450 marlin case is a little shorter and has a belt near the base and has a little less case capacity than the 45/70 . as long as you are not shooting max loads it should work.

The 450 is a rimless version of the 45-70. I don't know about max loads but there should be no problems with cast loads as the 45-70 is considered a medium low pressure cartridge. The only problem you will have is the length of the cast boolit. I could not shoot the 500 gr. boolits in my 1895 Marlin 45-70 because they were to long to cycle. The Lyman 457122 322 gr. HP shot the best. A load of 13 grs. of Unique with that boolit was a nice soft load at about 1100 FPS.

According to my 49th edition of the Lyman manual, anything that can be loaded in the 45-70 can be loaded in the 450 Marlin except for the boolit length. The Marlin 1895 has an (over all length) limiting factor. Your 350 gr. boolit should work very well with light 45-70 loads.
This is an incorrect statement and I should have to eat my words. Most of the loads for the 45-70 in (Lever Action) can be loaded in the 450 Marlin but that can only be determend by consulting a reloading manual. I was comparing case length instead of case capacity. There is only .005" difference between the cases but the internal capacity is as BABore said 10 percent. I will have to be somewhat more carefull about my statements.

First off, the 45/70 is loaded to three different pressure levels in most manuals. Ruger #1 level loads are totally out of the question all together. Marlin level 45/70 loads are questionable. Someone mentioned a small case capacity difference. I would say "Ya Thnk". A Winchester 45/70 case has a 5-7 grain capacity difference over a Hornady 450 Marlin case. That's a full 10% capacity difference. Look at the % difference of starting versus max loads. Does that equal the 10% capacity difference? In most cases, no it doesn't. Boolit protrusion into the case also has to be considered as has already been mentioned. Trapdoor 45/70 data is perfectly safe.

There is plenty of 450 Marlin data available now. Jacketed data can be used as a starting point and some even up to max for cast boolits of similar weight and bearing surface. Review several sources and use some common sense. I've been loading for the 450 since its inception and had to deal with the lack of data and alot of interperlation. I've also seen lab pressure data on early work-ups. Loads that exhibited no traditional pressure signs were well over the 42.5 kpsi SAAMI limit. Primer condition, extraction, and CHE don't work out with rounds in the 40 kpsi pressure range.

Your 350 gr boolit will work well with Reloder 7, H322, Benchmark, IMR 8208, and IMR 3031. Federal 210M match primers give outstanding accuracy and low extreme spreads. Most Marlins will chamber up to a 0.462 diameter boolit and shoot best at 0.461+ diameter. You should also be aware that the 450 Marlin throat is set up different than the 45/70. Most 450 chambers will allow up to a 0.125", full diameter, front band to get some engraving. A boolit designed for the 45/70 may have a long run-in.

I do it all the time. Start with the minimum load and work up. Keep in mind there are several different kinds of 45-70 loads.

Old ones
Lever actions
Modern non-lever actions.

Lee has a good manual that distinguishes them.

My 450 is a MArlin 1895M. i found I can use any 45-70 lever action load in it. HOWEVER do this at your own risk. Never use the modern non-lever action loads in a lever action. Bad things can happen.

Do you have a particular bullet in mind? I would be glad to share what worked for me.

I use 57.5 grains of Varget in a 350 gr lead gas check boolit. About 1850 fps
I also used 48 grs of H4198 2020 fps

nail: BABore is correct. All though there are a number of loads in each of the 3 catagorys that will work in the 450 Marlin just be sure to double check and cross reference.
