I am working on a project, re-living my childhood actually, and find I need a small quantity of DuPont 5066, #5 and #6 Pistol powder, and some DuPont #80. If anyone has some of these old-timers, and would be willing to sell me some, I would sure appreciate it.

horne458,

I enjoy shooting the powders that my father and my father before him would have used. I have the powders that you mentioned and have used them to great satisfaction.......reliving history, so to speak.

The problem is, an individual cannot ship smokeless propellants unless he has a license to do so (been there, tried it) .

Where are you located?

Thanks for the reply. I live in northeast Missouri. Would a dealer in your area be willing to ship powder for you? I am more than willing to pay for the powder, any shipping costs, reasonable dealer charges, etc.

Thanks again,

Don Horne, Northeast Missouri

Don,

As far as I know, one would need to be manufacturer or a distributor in order to ship smokeless powder. A gun store would not qualify. I will check into it further over the next few days and let you know.

IMR 4759 is a direct dedendant of the #80 pistol powder. So if your dealer could get a 5 lb jug for you part of your quest would be solved. Works great as a cast bullet powder especially in bottlenecked cases. Frank

Frank,

Got 4759 already, just wanted to use it's predecessor, #80.

I believe #80 is what Elmer Keith used to load hot .44 Specials with before 2400 came along. (Introduced for loading the .22 Hornet.)

Finding any of those powders in shootable condition may be the trick.

I had two containers of 5066 still sealed in celophane. When I opened them, both were bad and that's been 20 years ago.

Too bad the powder companies won't make a "nostalgic" run of some of the oldies like these and Hi Vel #2.

I guess we buy anything they put out anyway so why bother./beagle

I have some #6 I just inherited from my Dad and was wondering what to do with. It
was my Grandad's and it came with a neat little homemade powder measure that
measures out about 3.5 grains of powder per twist.

The powder smells and looks good. I also got about 20 lbs of other powders, mostly rifle
and all except some ww2 surplus has shot identical to the modern versions. The surplus
powder was rusty so became lawn fertilizer.

If you could find a safe and legal way for transport i could sell the #6. I am in California.
It is a mostly full can and is lot #19 with the paper intact and no rust on the can. My
dad stored all his powder in a trunk in the basement.

I BELIEVE 700 X IS SUCCESER TO #5+#6+#5066.AT LEAST THATS THE WAY I WENT.I USED #5 TILL THEY STOPPED MAKING IT,REPLACED BY #6 THEN THEY REPLACED #6 WITH #5066 THAT CHANGED TO # 700X.YOU WILL GET THE SAME RESULTS WITH 700 X.I USE 2.8 gr WITH 148gr WADCUTTER IN 38 SPEC.
