View Full Version : 412640 Mihec 4 Cavity Brass Cramer & Solid

I have gotten permission from Mihec to rerun the original 41 Caliber mold that he did in a two cavity about 2.5 years ago. However, this time it will be a four cavity brass. This buy will be for both a cramer style hollowpoint as well as a solid version. This mold closely resembles a scaled down 429640 which is one fine 44 design.

http://i295.photobucket.com/albums/mm157/happyjoyfully/413640-1.jpg

45 2.1 has provided us with an updated drawing. He has made the large pin a little smaller, as it was very large. This should work better.

For those of you newer to this: This HP as pictured will absolutely blow off the whole front of the bullet at magnum velocities with like a 20:1 alloy and give you explosive expansion, (superior watermelon medicine) but little weight retension and probably not be a real good hunting bullet. I can't say how they would be for self defense, but they are devastating to wet phone books. And at reduced velocties you would probably get a nice mushroom with the larger HP cavity. The smaller HP should handle magnum velocities better for purposes like hunting. But the disclaimer here is that there are a lot of variables, cheif of which is your alloy, but also including the target and other things, so to be safe, order both sets and do your own experimentation.

Please help me out and give me all the information I need when you PM me so I don't have to come back and ask you for it. Please PM me with the following info.

1. Paypal address (this is an email address)
2. Zip Code
3. Solid or HP (All four cavities must be the same)(If you order HP it does have reversable pins which will cast solids)
4. Gas check or Plain Base (All four cavities must be the same)
5. Pins choices: Small Round, Large Round, Penta

Price for the Cramer HP version will be $130 + $20 freight = $150.00 total
Extra pin sets $16 each.
Price for the Solid version will be $95 + $15 freight - $ $110 total.

As per normal with Mihec group buys, payment will be expected upon receipt of a paypal invoice from Miha after he has made the molds. Up untill the buy is closed you may alter or cancel you order, but once the buy is closed you are commited.

I will maintain the list of orders in Post #2. You will be listed by your zip code in the order of order placement. Please check there to make sure I have your order correct and PLEASE let me know if it isn't right. It wouldn't be the first mistake I have made.

Some more information: All these large hollowpoints perform extremely well on deer and under size game. If you'll note the thickness of a ribcage, you'll see that all the action happens from 1" in to about 11" in. Smaller game like fox, groundhog and coyote is somewhat less thick. Small hollowpoints have very little time to open with anything but a soft lead/tin alloy. I cast mine out of 50-50 Pb/WW alloy and water drop them. The nose starts expanding well on the entrance with it blowing off and devestating the internals and a full caliber hole (everything from the crimp groove back remains to penetrate and is quite ragged on the leading edge) leaving the opposite side. Performance on game has been exceptional with DRT to 50 yard runs depending on where they get shot. Broadside is usually DRT with 41 caliber and up to frontal heart shots with 35 caliber giving the 50 yard run. ALL broadsides have went thru the animal. You have to work at keeping one in.

I would love to get one of these and size them down for my .401 WSL.

The solid weight is right about midway between the 212 and 240 gr Lyman moulds... although something tells me that I would have to fill the lube grooves first, before reducing the diameter.

Please put me down for a 4-GC w/ SMALL ROUND HP reversible pins.

Lyman produced mold numbers 41028 and 410426 for the 401 WSL. I have both as well as access to the Win 1910 rifle. I form cases from the 7.62x39 case for it. The rifle needs 0.408" diameter boolits to chamber well and shoot good. With the 0.408" sizing diameter, the nose will size 0.030" or so. The following picture lines the RN 410426 with this GB picture at the crimp groove.

45 2.1,

Have you tried the comparative CAD drawing of this design with the Lyman 41028?
This would be interesting to compare (particularly the drive band areas)...

felix
01-23-2012, 11:25 AM
The 41 will significantly out-penetrate 35, 44 and 45 pistol rounds using nominal boolits and equivalent guns using WW metal and its lookalikes using proverbial max pistol velocities. The implication is that softer metals for the 41 could be used instead of that used for the rest of them to obtain the same "killing" results. ... felix

Is there any reasonable estimate when this mould will be cut? I am interested , but I was just wondering aprox. close date . ( even if it is a couple months out )Thanks.

happy7
01-24-2012, 09:33 AM
Honestly, the best I can nail it down is somwhere between three months and eighteen months, but I can't even guarantee that. The thing is that you can always cancel again after signing up, as long as you do so before it goes to production. But if you don't sign up before it goes to production, you can miss out, and that usually happens without much warning.

Nope, the 401 WSL is basically a 41 Mag on steriods..... with a recoil operated action with a narrow operating window. Light boolits in it don't interest me like they do in a revolver.

Well, that is always the million dollar question. In this case, this mold has already been run so if anyone can chime in on what the original dropped at, that would be helpful. But MP can adjust it. The thing is, with so many people using scrap alloys, not to mention different casting methods, it is hard to pin down exactly what it will be to the 1000th. Miha had some issues in his early molds with them coming in undersized, but he got that ironed out early on and I think one thing we can count on is that it won't come in undersized. Maybe I should confer with Miha on this. I personally would prefer this bullet to drop at .412 over .413. If it is speced at .413 and drops at .414, that is just too big, in my opinion, especially in a round flat design. I feel that a mold speced at .412 is big enough that it can come in a 1000th undersize and still be big enough, or a thousanth over, and not be too big.

So everyone, please chime in. Do you prefer .412 or .413 in WW, bearing in mind that diffferent people can get different dimensions from the same mold.

I was going to bring this up in the 429-460 thread. It's important that we are on the same page.

I just bought a set of plug gauges and my MP 432-256 (.432 version) is an actual .434+ and casts .433 in 85/3/2 and I think would hold .432 in almost pure lead.

Works very well for me.

Edit: I remeasured and the MP 432-256 I have is a bit over .434 and bit under .435. that's as close as I can get.

Guess I should chime in on this since I was the scoundrel who wanted to start this up in the first place. I want to shoot for .412. A .411 size is perfect for my SBH and I like to size down a bit for uniformity. So something in .412 would be ideal (if they dropped at .413 it would be ok). I cast with WW mostly.

Bodydoc447
02-10-2012, 11:40 PM
My preference would be for the WW bullets to drop at .412".

Ya know, this isn't a vote fest. This is a remake of an existing design with an existing cherry...................... IIRC the original was set up for 0.412" diameter. I think Miha cut them so they cast out at about 0.4125". I would imagine that he will do the same thing again.

I'm curious as to why a solid mould?
Miha has been making pins to make his cramer moulds cast solids, without any pin protrusion from the bottom of the mould.
I do know that those pins are a recent development of his.
Matt, can you ask him if that is an option here?
That would be my preferred mould, just get a 4 cavity cramer with all pins. One mould can do it all (solids and HP) AND I can use it with my bottom pour pot/mould guide combo.

happy7

Yes it is an option.

The solid option is for those who are not interested in casting hollowpoints, or who don't like messing with the pins when they want to cast solids.

I am very interested in this mold!!!

I have a 15in Encore barrel in 414 SM that is shooting a 210gr Hornady XTP at 2100 fps. With that being said, and the fact I will be casting from straight WW’s, what type of hollow point pins would you recommend? I am guessing small round, but I respect the knowledge of the users on this sight!

Also, can I mail you in a Money Order?

Besides the obvious part that I am going to need them GC’s am I missing anything?

Duane

happy7
07-30-2012, 08:05 PM
The small round pins are intended for higher velocities and so are recommended for your application. However, the alloy you use has a big influence over how the bullet will perform. Straight WW is not an ideal HP alloy. It is brittle and will usually shed the nose as it expands. People generally want a bigger HP cavity for WW alloy but I would still recommend the small pins for that velocity though based on my past experience, but I want you to know that I don't know for sure without trying it. The bottom line is that you, together with the other participants in this buy will be doing some experimenting once we get these molds to figure out what will work best for our particular velocity and alloy. I do recommend that you keep an eye out for some pure lead and a little tin wouldn't hurt either.

Because MP molds is located in Europe, he is not able to accept money orders. Therefore payment must go through paypal or alertpay. If you are unable to use those, perhaps you have a friend with paypal, or perhaps someone is this group buy will be able to accomodate you by making payment for you and you sending them a MO. Of course that would be stricktly your own arrangement.

How much difference would the gc version really make in performance?

for full power loads I would recommend the gas check version. it gives you more flexibility on alloy so that you can use an alloy that will be maleable and expand rather than hard and brittle and come apart.

Tracy,
For hunting, I prefer to use an alloy that is no harder than WW.
So, without a GC, I would keep the pressure under 25KPSI,
with the boolit weight of 210 to 220, that'd get you about
1000fps to 1100fps MAX (depending on powder choice).

Now, what I do for my 41 cal. NOE Keith style PB HP boolits,
is use a 50/50 alloy WW/Range scrap and I put a PB gas check
made from popcan metal. I can push it faster, and it's soft enough
to expand and not break apart.

for full power loads I would recommend the gas check version. it gives you more flexibility on alloy so that you can use an alloy that will be maleable and expand rather than hard and brittle and come apart.

Tracy,
For hunting, I prefer to use an alloy that is no harder than WW.

Jon

I hunt with the 41 mag and have shot deer with HP boolits from 174 gr. to 238 gr. All of them perform basically the same. All are cast of 50% WW / 50% dead soft lead water dropped out of the mold.... a hard boolit with a soft core. All of them are plain base boolits with devastating effect on deer that way with immediate putdowns. Try it on a clay bank and see what happens for yourself.

Status? Is there an issue with the pin design?

My understanding from the original post that the large HP pins in the first run of this mold (er, 4 or 5 years ago or so-I'm guessing) proved a little large at magnum velocities, expanding to disintegration so they are reduced a little in this run...
