I recently picked up a cheap $10 one off ebay. On first installation, the attachment screw provided (that goes through the sight base holes to secure the mount to the sight base) was too narrow and a bit loose in the sight base holes. This allowed the base to rock around somewhat on the rifle.

Nevertheless, using a Tasco handgun scope the loose scope/base combo shot about 4" groups at 50 yards. Not great, but workable for close range.

This evening, I pulled the scope off and measured the diameter of the original sight pin (about .119 inches). I drilled out the scope base center hole with a 1/8" (.123 diam by my micrometer) bit and then attached the scope base to the sight base using the original sight pin. It was a slightly tight fit but now the base is solidly attached, no rocking or movement.

Once the scope base is attached to the gun, there are 3 set screws you tighten up to stabilize the base vertically. The setup seems much more solid now than first time around. I expect groups will tighten up somewhat.

I use one - works ok for me - you have to get used to it - I have scout set ups on several
rifles now.

With the Mosin you do have to check and/or loctite your screws.

and here's some links for you to research

Hey Mike--

I have found that this kind of mount is one of those get-what-you-pay-for systems and have a Darrell's scout mount on my M39 and just put one on a Hungarian M44.
I have a Redfield 5star 2x7 on the M39 and when on 7 power my cheekweld moves back quite far, but still acceptable.
On the Hungarian, I got a deal on a Burris 2x7 pistol scope that seems to be much better than the Redfield, but haven't shot it yet.
As Artful said, it does take some getting used to, but at least I'm not chopping up my near unissued M39 'B' barrel and my tired eyes can see the target. I hope to take it out deer hunting next year and the M39 held some real nice groups with that Barnaul 205gr SP ammo available.
Hope this helps, Eric

PS; Artful, did you make that cheek rest?? It looks like that would work for me too. I have a Garand cheek rest on the M39 now, but did have that on my PSL.

Hello,

Brass Stacker is part of The Mosin Guild:

My rifles are all working guns. If they came with iron sights, I like to keep them. This is the only scout mount I know of that leaves the rear sight intact on the Mosin-Nagant.

Regards,

Josh

I mounted one of the cheapo scout mounts on my truck rifle, took a bit of retro to get it solid, but wasn't worried about boogering up the pre-bubbarized MN.

If your Mosin was made during WWII you might be able to remove the whole rear sight. These were not always soldered on. Lift the sight tang up and look for a set screw over the rearmost base pin. If you can unscrew it and drive that pin out, the whole sight will come off leaving a 'Weaver' type dovetail base that will accept .22 scope rings. You will have to use high mount rings. Worth checking out.

Here's a video of one. He bad mouths the other types, but I have an S&K on my M95 and it's great.

Tula never went to the pins, they continued to solder throughout the war. And the Model 44 never had a dovetail at all.

I looked on the back of my 1937 stamped Tula rear sight and could see a dovetail and a set screw in top back. Removed the set screw, and could see the sight had no pins and was soldered. Tested solder with a sharp scribe and determined is was soft, not hard silver solder. Took Mapp torch and applied heat, did not take much and solder flowed, easily tapped the sight forward right off dovetail. while still hot wiped all the solder off until clean

I keep reading the MN dovetails are 3/8" on top flat, but not this one, it is 12 mm (almost 1/2"). I think one of the European 11 mm (about 7/16") dovetail mounts may work OK, so will order one of these out and see. If not will just reinstall original and solder in place.

Something like this for clearance: http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41bM1%2BmHI9L._SL500_AA300_.jpg

But OTOH, this 11 mm to Weaver adapter would give more leeway for scopes, adjustment etc and it comes with a hold down lock screw to prevent recoil creep: http://cdn.pyramydair.com/images/zoomed/UTG-Tactical-Rail-Adaptor-22cal_MNT-PMTOWL_rail-adaptor_zm.jpg

Looks pretty strudy and it is only ten bucks, dimple the dovetail for the hold down lock screw and it is not going to move: http://cdn.pyramydair.com/images/zoomed/UTG-Tactical-Rail-Adaptor-22cal_MNT-PMTOWL_rail-adaptor_zm2.jpg

Got 11 mm dovetail to weaver mount installed on the MN dovetail, very pleased with it.

This is the full dog set screw which comes threaded into mount and prevents sliding under recoil.

I milled shallow recess in MN dovetail to accept the full dog set screw, very much doubt there will be any movement of the mount.
