I am looking to purchase a Boyd's laminate stock for my Ruger M77 Tang Safety model. The stocks for this gun are only offered in a 'semi-inletted' version. How much skill is required to finish the inletting of the stock? I understand that this will be time consuming work, but I would like to do it myself for the experience and pride of having done myself. I would like to pillar/glss bed the stock prior to finalizing the installation. Is doing all of this on my own without a gunsmith a bad idea?

I never had any issues with Boyd's stocks.
You should have no issues. Just go slow.
They do a good job.

Because of the angled screw at the recoil lug. pillar bedding may be problematic. I haven't tried it on that action so I don't know for sure. Just something to consider.

I have used a couple of Boyd's stocks, they aren't bad.

I would rather have to scrape the inletting for a good fit than have a stock that the action will fall into with gaps that look like the Grand Canyon.

Take your time; use scrapers, not a dremel tool for relieving the inletting.
